Today 10 years ago Aaron Swartz committed suicide, after being arrested by MIT police and prosecuted by the then U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz for massively downloading academic journal articles from JSTOR. He was charged $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison. He was 26 years old.
He believed that, above anything else, information should be free.

I went from writing this to listening to @taylorlorenz talk to @adamconover on #Factually about #SocialMedia. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't use the opportunity to plug their #Mastodon accounts because talking about the alternatives is a big part of changing the internet landscape.
Yesterday would have been Aaron Swartz's thirty-seventh birthday. Aaron did so much great that contributed to our freedoms in technology and on the Internet. Aaron Swartz war nur ein paar Tage jünger als ich und war so viel talentierter. Mit 14 lernte ich gerade HTML kennen und er entwickelte die #RSS Spezifikation mit. Ich lernte erst nach seinem Tod so wirklich was für ein Mensch er war und umso schmerzlicher fühlte sich sein Verlust im Nachhinein an.
Heute wäre er 37 geworden.
