chf, (edited ) So basically what this guy is saying: "Let's go from reddit to another closed platform, so they could lock us again later the way reddit did". Nice alternative
Saturdaycat, This is my exact concern about squabbles
abff08f4813c, Ditto
Skyler, Yeah, that's my concern when it comes to BlueSky as a Twitter replacement. Seems like the Fediverse is the best way so far to keep that from happening.
GreatBigJerk, BlueSky looks like it's open source though.
aeternum, So was reddit. Look at how that turned out.
sab, I hadn't heard of Squabbles before, so I naïvely thought the post was about the squabble between Kbin and Lemmy. :)
QuantumFilament, Microsoft Windows is a closed platform, while Linux is an open one. You could make the same argument, but that doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of things that Windows has going for it that Linux does not. While there is a subsection of power users who are fine with Linux, it's nowhere near what it needs to be to appeal to the masses.
I understand why an open platform is important to you, but it should not be treated as the only metric that matters.
poiy, A better UI/UX would destroy the squabbles crowd.
some improvements, especially on mobile would be nice.
and i totally know this is just the beginning.
i am happy to be here.
i usually mostly lurk, but this is a good place to start and be the dude that our dudes need.
metaStatic, good thing about lurking is I can just throw these sites into my Feedly page to doomscroll until something pulls ahead.
BlackCoffee, I can understand.
Squabbles is very twitter and social media feed like in it's presentation.
Exactly the thing that I don't search for. But I can imagine that if that is what you search for, then it gives you a better experience.
The fact that it is closed off and in the Faq there is already talk about an monetization model and "fair" pricing for 3rd party users of the API is for me a bit of a red flag.
This was the devs answer on being open source;
"Open source:
unfortunately i can't risk open source. competitors who already have a user base might take code from mine to grow their own".I can understand but it after the Reddit thing I personally am done with the centralization information of 1 specific platform.
dellyphy, This is such a weird thing for a developer to say. There is no secret source anymore. What takes money is infrastructure, legal, customer support. Noone is going to steal his code lol.
Calcifer, Hey that’s me! Literally lol
I’m giving both platforms pretty equal attention while everything shakes out but squabbles has the upper hand in engagement right now.
Kbin is still very nice, just less of what I’m personally looking for. The fediverse concept isn’t for everyone.
sab, At least you managed to generate some engagement! ;)
Kara, You are now enemy number 1 of the fediverse unfortunately
Margo-goodlife, I'm enjoying both as well as tildes. I had a really varied reddit feed and so far they all satisfy in their own magical way.
flipplup, Tried Squabbles, interested to see where it goes as it’s rapidly developing but right now it feels a bit closed off to me. Bit too close to Twitter in the way posts are handled.
ritzylasagna, As a mobile user, I've got to say they've got a nice UI going and it scrolls nice and smooth. Their layout is pretty easy, straightforward, familiar and intuitive.
I've had a bit of a hard time figuring out kbin and the fediverse. I'm figuring it out but it takes some effort.
pezhore, I'm still trying to find an Android app for Kbin/Lemmy. There's Jerboa, but it doesn't seem to work well.
SeatBeeSate, No. And I keep getting redirected to other web pages, images only showing as thumbnails, or links opening in web apps like the one I have bookmarked for kbin. It's very confusing. It's the primary thing leading to some confusion using this platform.
I would like one unified way to browse and maybe have a server switcher in case one is backed up and whatnot. I'm not sure either if subscribed communities sync or if I have to sub on each platform. I've managed to snag accounts on a few since most weren't responding to applications.
Lazycog, I just find it bit sad, because squabbles is not open-source and not part of the fediverse. But each to their own.
tripp, I think squabbles would take of more with casual users. Some people find the fediverse to be unusable when it comes to searching for communities.
sab, I mean, kbin is pretty much for people who are happy to test alpha software. I don't blame people for finding it a bit off-putting.
...personally, I might lose interest once it stops being rough around the edges. I like the feeling of this place right now.
aerir, ye same, prefer the layout over here
artillect, Tbh I don't really like the look of squabbles. I think what they're doing with the comments is kinda cool, but the layout just doesn't work for me
Warped, So what? We all have our options, some will opt to stay on Reddit. It's up to them. We can only make decisions for ourselves. But tribalism and name-calling seems a bit rubbish. Keep the drama back on Reddit.
missingno, Let's not make these kinds of callout posts, tribalism doesn't make us look good.
roofuskit, You don't think "declaration of war" as a reaction to that innocuous comment is a bit tongue in cheek?
