"An arms race on our streets." Oversized SUVs and pickups are bad for all of us: pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers. It's not fair that safety testing in Canada is only for those on the inside of the vehicle. Sign the federal petition here: https://ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-4944

An excellent article and report about the issue of large vehicles: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-report-from-advocacy-groups-urges-tighter-regulations-for-suvs-and/

@mbonsma
My co-worker said to me "I saw you on your bike on my way to work. I almost hit you." That was interesting because the entire way that our routes coincided I was in bike lanes or quiet neighborhood streets. I follow traffic rules and check over my shoulder before left turns. She drives an SUV.
She said it again the next week, so she seems to have thought it was funny.
Never said anything about hitting my car on days I drove to work. I wonder why.

@Osteopenia_Powers ooof that is awful!

@mbonsma Try buying a car that will fit into the average size garage. It's gotten completely ridiculous. We bought a small SUV (tall short car actually) just so it would fit in the garage with room.

@RegGuy the car share I belong to said they're actually having trouble even finding compact cars to purchase!

ClickyMcTicker,

@mbonsma
Hard limits on height. (Shave a foot or two off them)
Hard limits on engine size. (2L is enough for private vehicles. If you want a bigger car you can drive it slower)
Remove ownership by private individuals (work trucks and rentals only. Larger engines require a license)
Hard limits on top speed (install speed governing devices that limit them to the highest speed limit in the region)
You can have your road tank but it’ll do about 35mph tops and accelerate “eventually”

@ClickyMcTicker agree. We have the technology, all levels of government need to come together to fix this.

@mbonsma At least here in Alaska there is the pretense of actually needing one.

@mbonsma Taking this meme to its logical conclusion, I think going to buy a Norinco VT-4 to maximise my survivability in the event of a collision at the obvious expense of everyone else’s.

patcanfield,

@mbonsma While some NEED pick-ups, almost always they have no cargo.. MANY drive pick-ups as a statement--that they don't care about climate change, wasting fuel, (they want people to think they're as wealthy as every other irresponsible citizen?)--they think everyone who sees them knows they're ---a pick-up truck owner? Is that Country? Plan to help move-others, or self? Hopeful for all the stuff you'll buy you need a truck to haul? I understand some people a just PU addicts
