Some of Stewart’s jokes landed but I would argue the message of his monologue is actually the very last thing we need right now unless you want four more years of Trump. It certainly didn’t inspire anyone to vote.
Jon Stewart still has it in terms of being funny and entertaining but the political content of this monologue is basically the New York Times op-ed page in TV form. Both sides are not in fact equally bad!
@GottaLaff I am not surprised. He hurt Hillary so much - along the years but especially in 2016, that I think he has stock in tfg, along with Putin, Bernie and the bros.

Seth Meyers hit a lot of the same beats and made a lot of the same points in last night's A Closer Look, but I think he did a much more effective job with similar material.
I still like Stewart, and it's been awhile since he's been behind the desk. I hope he gets better in the coming weeks and months. I'm also interested in seeing if he can help revitalize the show in his capacity as executive producer. He's always been good at nurturing talent.
I like Jon Stewart. But if he can't grasp the fact that things have changed, and at present, of the two major political parties, only one is pro-democracy. And that the situation is serious enough that Liz Cheney is out there endorsing a Democrat (!) -- then I think I'll hold off watching his show, until maybe after the 2024 election, or maybe never.
@GottaLaff This is the same Jon Stewart who fumbled the 2010 midterms with a remarkably ill-timed bothsides kumbaya normalizing the teaparty and has still not realized it? As they say, live by the comedian, die by the comedian.
@GottaLaff I haven’t watched it yet, but the important thing to remember is that the writers are responsible for what Jon Stewart says on screen, and they’re trying to be “topical”. Yes, he works with them on the script approves it, but under an incredibly tight deadline. If social media pans them for being too Both Sides, they may shift their position.
I’m going to give him a few weeks to settle in before I judge the vibe of his hosting overall.
I probably wasn't gonna anyway, because I don't think Steward should be taking oxygen away from the many good candidates to chair TDS, but fuck his both sider shit.
@GottaLaff I was honestly VERY excited about his return! And then I watched and was immediately reminded of everything I hadn't enjoyed about his time at TDS. There were some moments that really hit for me, but most was a miss. I'll probably watch a few more eps to give it a fair shot, but am not sure I'll tune in every week over the entire year.
Should we all pretend there is nothing to mock in Biden's campaign and believe that will be why he will get elected if we don't? I want people in his campaign to watch popular culture and help armor up the campaign based on that.
I believe Biden is a good candidate because he is responsive.
I know that making the case how evil Trump is critically important but Biden also has to work on the part as to why he should be president.
@HikerGeek Nobody said Never mock. But by pushing ageism, it’s going to tank his chances. It’s Hillary’s emails all over again. His age has been talked about ad nauseam. There’s no reason to keep pushing it, and every reason to move on.
What bothers me is that the age thing is not sticking to Trump just because he dyes his hair an unnatural orange. They are both basically the same age and Biden is in more than 10 times better shape than Trump.
If Jon leans too far left will he narrow his audience and be preaching to the choir?
A big part of me really wished Hillary never said Biden's age is a legitimate issue like she did recently. But unfortunately she's right. Trump's camp will not be backing off this issue. There is no hope of it just going away.
@GottaLaff person spent more than a year talking about nothing but benign hobbies and is now suddenly commenting on political posts about Biden’s age and “terrible Mideast policies”—and claims not to even know what “giving ammo to the other side” means because “I’m an independent.” At best, this person is freakishly naive.

The latter is what will likely doom his chance of reelection.
@GottaLaff I think we need to replace "Four more years of Trump" with "The end of democracy". I'm in my 70s and am not given to hyperbole, but this is real.
@GottaLaff I didn't like it. I don't think he's taking into account the completely changed nature of the landscape. Couple of jokes landed but not many more did.
@GottaLaff he had a bit about being an old white man himself, it was meant to be self deprecating and funny, he's a comedian and a good person, but he gets in over his head.
@GottaLaff so far it is outstanding and yes we do need this message. We need people running that can be real leaders, not puppets, and right now we have Statler and Waldorf as our only choices. And that is pretty sad.

@GottaLaff the ageism is unkind and I apologize for taking part in it. I’m just really over those two as I don’t agree with them politically and I think they are holding us all back.
Hence my comparison to the critics. I felt they held the show back with their mockery and I never appreciated their part. Like they were the warning to not get set in outdated thoughts
