Please do vote if you're in the US. Literally every school board/director up for us had a book burning type running, some more subtle than others.

I know it's boring off year stuff but holy shit those types can do damage en masse.

@glassbottommeg @annaleen In Houston, we don’t have any school board elections. Texas just took away local control of our schools on a pretense but really for being in a blue city. Time to purge anything “woke”—the book burning types are in full control and we don’t get a say.

I’ll vote, out of habit I guess. There’s still city council, for what local power Texas hasn’t appropriated yet. But in so many ways, this is not a real democracy.

@glassbottommeg and ask your local newspaper not to hide voting information behind a paywall. That’s one of the only ways to find out about local candidates and issues.

@glassbottommeg we voted in New York state

@glassbottommeg

A quick heuristic: if their site mentions "ideology" (usually in the context of "doesn't belong in the classroom")

you can usually find enough other red flags to decide the issue

@glassbottommeg Where I vote, you can do it in your underwear. Still gotta read the voter's pamphlet - but wait until you get your ballot because the pamphlet includes everybody including that Goodspaceguy (that's what he runs under).

2of4 school board candidates were “anti-woke”. other 2 were qualified/experienced. i voted for latter 2

@glassbottommeg we have an honest-to-god antivaxxer, antimasking conspiracy theorist running for school board here in lovely, liberal bubble Boulder, Colorado. This is no joke. We all have to vote as if our lives depended on it, because they literally do.

@glassbottommeg we had one who had zero comprehensible policy ideas beyond wanting "parent involvement", but was passionate about "terrorism" and "kidnapping" (?????). His endorsements were "his family and some other people" (no joke).
Red flags screaming loud and clear about the risks to education quality.

@glassbottommeg I know i'm not voting for the incumbents, but the mayor is unopposed. Do I dare write myself in, if too many find out I might in

@glassbottommeg This is really dangerous in my area. There are no candidate bios or statements for the board of Ed positions.

That said, one of the candidates is running an unsuccessful GoFundMe campaign under the banner, "Education before indoctrination".

Guess I know who I'm not voting for.

housepanther,

@glassbottommeg Change can often begin from the bottom up.

@glassbottommeg I stood for election for a school board. I ran against corruption, on an anti corruption stance. They voted in seemingly the most corrupt people instead. I washed my hands of it then and won't stand next time. The voters clearly want corrupt people, not people that want to stamp out corruption. Needless to say, the money flow into various pockets has dramatically increased now.

@glassbottommeg Putting aside, notably in the USA, Qanon/MAGA/Conspirituality types have decided their beachhead is the civic level, absolutely NOTHING can ruin your day to day existence like a poorly run city or school district. Something as simple as a non working traffic light you need every morning to make a difficult left can impact the quality of your life.

@glassbottommeg I think more people would vote if it were easier to do. I don’t understand why more people aren’t pushing for vote by mail. No more standing in line, I love it. It’s so much easier, and I would argue more secure than machines.

@glassbottommeg it’s by design as Steve Bannon ( An architect of #MAGA ) knows all politics is local

@glassbottommeg It takes about 20 minutes to scan through the list and go "fine, fine, fine, OH HELL NO, fine, er... OK... whatever floats your boat, fine, OH HELL NO". You don't have to pick the BEST "fine", just don't pick a blatant Nazi. They're not subtle.
