To understand why Andreessen's "Techno-Optimist" piece is so wretched, go to the "Enemies" list and gape at the things he and his bros want to get rid of.

They include: “Sustainable Development Goals”, “social responsibility”, “trust and safety”, and (among others) “tech ethics”.

Remember, those are what the tech bros despise...

gnutelephony,

@dangillmor It's like James Bond villains needing to reveal their evil plans.

@dangillmor It's the most cynical, depressing thing I've seen come out of VC tech for a long time, and there's a very, very high bar for that. It's worse than wretched. He talks about wanting to make supermen and being anti-inclusion. There's a really nasty picture being drawn.

@ben @dangillmor let's not mince words: it's fascism wrapped up in technobabble.

@dangillmor I wrote about this and the technological logically fallacy of his arguments at length, if you're interested. https://robertvanwey.substack.com/p/marc-andreessen-makes-a-strong-argument

@dangillmor. And/or look at the prominent place of #fascist #Marinetti in the piece. And/or daring to include #CarrieFisher as someone who would give any of these people the time of day. And/or the invocation of #AndyWarhol.

@dangillmor I wonder who is audience is supposed to be. Not ordinary people surely.

Perhaps his Saudi investors who are more prone to believing his bullshit? Maybe he's had challenges raising funds?

@danjac @dangillmor

The audience is probably crypto suckers and Musk cultists.

@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@jonhendry @dangillmor sure, but that's preaching to the converted, and not people with deep pockets that really matter to a16z.

The Saudis though will fund anything : WeWork for example, or that weird ditch city in the desert, if they think it sounds cool enough.

Andreesen doesn’t need money he needs foot soldiers and propagandists to spread his message and recruit others.

@jonhendry @dangillmor h

Recruit others to what end though?

@danjac @dangillmor

Mashing American society into the shape he wants it to be as described by his enemies list.

  • etikemik,

    @aiefel @dangillmor Philosophically, this stuff indeed resembles Rand—but I notice that she doesn’t make it onto Andreessen’s reading list. He does quote at length from Thus Spake Zarathustra, though, which seems fitting, seeing as Rand’s work is little but warmed-over Nietzsche (which itself is little but warmed-over Plato).

    And the un ironic self heroism is something to behold. If this had been created by a small pod of tweenaged boys, one can almost see the humor in them wearing capes as they play pretend.

    But among grown ass adults, it's repulsive. I'm too lazy to go find a clip of Edna from the Incredibles admonishing "No capes!" but it certainly fits.
