@cabel Always start from scratch. I miss this option from your poll. (Data is already in the cloud. Only install the apps that I still need. Some logins are needed but overall always an improvement.)
@cabel Yes, to my previous purchases. The point is though to only install what I really use. Which is fewer and fewer. (Note that here in Europe the mobile net is excellent, and I can download an app pretty much anytime, so I don’t have to install apps “just in case” in advance.)
@cabel wasted like an hour trying to transfer from my old phone only to have it hang. Ended up downloading from iCloud as I walked to work. Maybe in another three years it'll work 🤞🏻 (didn't work the time before due to it only allowing me ~3 seconds to type a full alphanumeric passcode)
@cabel I thought conventional wisdom was that direct phone to phone transfer was fastest, and all your passwords to all the apps would travel with them.
Where as iCloud defaults to just downloading new copies of the app, no data, no data hooks?
@cabel it’s been a while, but I believe backing up to the Mac and making sure to encrypt the backup prevents you from having to enter your passwords again. I havent tried iPhone-to-iPhone, however.
@cabel my wife and I did an unscientific test yesterday. I picked iCloud restore and was up and running in about 10 minutes, while my wife picked restore from iPhone and it took over 45 minutes.
@cabel I usually have pretty good luck using the phone transfer method. 9/10 apps will still be logged in, but there’s always a few stragglers I feel like.
@cabel the kind peeps at my local Apple Store had no answer for wired transfer. They were suggesting iCloud restores for everyone, but I know those cause you to have to sign into more apps after.
The wifi at the store was getting nuked though. The wireless transfer slowed to “2 days” and quickly finished within 30 minutes as soon as we left the store (which they also claimed would kill the transfer)
@cabel always a clean fresh start and setup as new. Signing into iCloud is enough for me, and then enjoy just installing what I actually need, rather than all I previously had 😄
@cabel Device to device transfer prevents me from signing into a million apps. An unlucky few slip through, like my work’s Outlook email. The vast majority are signed in.
@cabel I prefer old phone to new phone using the magic whimsical pattern pairing because the new phone will download fresh installs of the apps then apply user data to them, which feels like the cleanest way to migrate.
