Another year, another new phone classic conundrum. What do YOU do during setup?!

(And does EITHER method prevent you from having to sign-in again to every app in the universe!?)

zengabor,

@cabel Always start from scratch. I miss this option from your poll. (Data is already in the cloud. Only install the apps that I still need. Some logins are needed but overall always an improvement.)

@zengabor Do you go to the App Store and manually reinstall every app?

zengabor,

@cabel Yes, to my previous purchases. The point is though to only install what I really use. Which is fewer and fewer. (Note that here in Europe the mobile net is excellent, and I can download an app pretty much anytime, so I don’t have to install apps “just in case” in advance.)

@cabel wasted like an hour trying to transfer from my old phone only to have it hang. Ended up downloading from iCloud as I walked to work. Maybe in another three years it'll work 🤞🏻 (didn't work the time before due to it only allowing me ~3 seconds to type a full alphanumeric passcode)

@cabel former product reviewer so: I always set up from new. Too many times, random stability issues can be tracked back to a bad data restore.

mcrute,

@cabel sadly no. Why do most developers mess this up? The keychain is your friend and then people can choose to use iCloud to sync if they like.

campbell,

@cabel Put off getting a new phone again and do nothing. Solves the problem and is less wasteful!

@cabel I thought conventional wisdom was that direct phone to phone transfer was fastest, and all your passwords to all the apps would travel with them.

Where as iCloud defaults to just downloading new copies of the app, no data, no data hooks?

phil,

@cabel Start from scratch.

chasedmartin,

@cabel always start from scratch. Reduces any bloat. Gives you a chance to rethink about how you set everything up.

@cabel In my experience transfer from iphone preserves a number of logins/passwords (not all, though.)

sawyerpaul,

@cabel is upgrade so infrequently I just start over from scratch. I like having the opportunity to rethink why I’m doing

dhritzkiv,

@cabel it’s been a while, but I believe backing up to the Mac and making sure to encrypt the backup prevents you from having to enter your passwords again. I havent tried iPhone-to-iPhone, however.

mcgaritydotme,

@cabel you’re missing “Fresh start”

martynpie,

@cabel phone transfer kept most of my sign ins. Only signed out of banking App so far.

thecodingbeard,

@cabel start fresh.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@cabel I start fresh every time. That way I always just get the apps I need and don’t transfer all the ones I forget about and never use.

alexm,

@cabel my wife and I did an unscientific test yesterday. I picked iCloud restore and was up and running in about 10 minutes, while my wife picked restore from iPhone and it took over 45 minutes.

dru89,

@cabel I usually have pretty good luck using the phone transfer method. 9/10 apps will still be logged in, but there’s always a few stragglers I feel like.

@cabel I tried connecting the phones with a USB-C to lightning cable, but no cigar. Maybe they’ll bring back the direct wired transfer next year.

cabel,
@cabel@panic.com avatar

@thatsthequy Oh wow, I totally thought that would work. Do you need a USB-C to Lightning Adapter for that to work?!

@cabel the kind peeps at my local Apple Store had no answer for wired transfer. They were suggesting iCloud restores for everyone, but I know those cause you to have to sign into more apps after.

The wifi at the store was getting nuked though. The wireless transfer slowed to “2 days” and quickly finished within 30 minutes as soon as we left the store (which they also claimed would kill the transfer)

Giz76,

@cabel always a clean fresh start and setup as new. Signing into iCloud is enough for me, and then enjoy just installing what I actually need, rather than all I previously had 😄

netopwibby,

@cabel I’m just prepared to not use my phone for several hours as data transfers.

Pungme,

@cabel iPhone to iPhone with a cable! 📲

@cabel Device to device transfer prevents me from signing into a million apps. An unlucky few slip through, like my work’s Outlook email. The vast majority are signed in.

bill0004,

@cabel I prefer old phone to new phone using the magic whimsical pattern pairing because the new phone will download fresh installs of the apps then apply user data to them, which feels like the cleanest way to migrate.

xbuzz,

@cabel transfer from iPhone will keep you logged in and access to your wallet (you just verify CVVs)
