Seriously considering cancelling Amazon Prime as it is up for renewal in a month at $139 plus tax.

We don’t use it ALL the time, but of course it is nice to have for the “free” shipping.

Any other people (or families) out there that have done it?

@onpaperwings Could 3 out of 4 American households be wrong? I think you deserve to give yourself a $139/month raise just for asking the question, Doug. With the exception of a single monthly magazine, the Sudweeks household is happily subscription free.

@davidsudweeks Well, it is $139 per year, but still, I agree.

@onpaperwings I buy local, for the shops, followed by smaller online outfits, with amazon only considered if it's impossible to do either of those. (My wife once accidentally took prime, and I got it canceled!)

@onpaperwings We’re an (99.99%) Amazon-free household since they placed their merchants’ ads in lots of right wing media without consent.

cjtype,

@onpaperwings I personally like not having Prime because it makes Amazon more of a last resort than a first resort. There a still things which are unfortunately hard to find elsewhere, so I do use it sometimes, and I can still get free shipping most of the time if I wait and order things together. But that also makes me consider local options first

@cjtype Yep. This is exactly what I assume but also want to get to.

@onpaperwings @cjtype I’m the same as CJ.

What sucks is it’s probably impossible to divest yourself from using services that use AWS—which is where Amazon makes its real money.

astifter,

@onpaperwings Yes, mainly because of how Amazon treats its employees. We try to order from local (Austria, Germany, EU) shops.
Also accepting (maybe) slower deliveries and more hassle when returning stuff makes for more conscious buying decisions.

@onpaperwings I wonder if the scattered offering of services (streaming video and music and other things) is, in part, to muddy the water for the consumer who's wondering if the whole thing is worth it?
