The new Slack layout is a deal breaker. Now I'm shopping for an alternative. Any suggestions?

I work with multiple clients and contractors for a short duration. This means that easy onboarding is a must. Also, it makes no sense to pay per seat (external Slack users worked well for this).

Should the app manage multiple workspaces, it should under no circumstances try to merge anything to "simplify". It is critical that the separation between workspaces is clear at all times.

@afilina Take a look at Zulip

@afilina i didn't get the new design yet, and this interminable list of rants is making me dread the moment 😭

@afilina Maybe the least friction might be discord as a lot of people are using it.

Otherwise, I try matrix/element and it is pretty good. Maybe a little too much technical detail (channel full ID, etc), but you can basically create your own workspaces with dedicated channel for specific people.

It might need some trying out first with some friends.

@afilina I'm on Team Discord for this one, of the things that people are likely to have seen before. Doesn't charge per seat either :)

anthony,

@afilina, Matrix? Synapse + Elements works very well.

Voice calls and screen sharing is also a must, and sharing files should be a simple drag-and-drop.

Threads are welcome, but not a deal breaker.

@ocramius Indeed, the inability to figure out wtf is going on in which channel is what made me hate Teams so much.

@ocramius @afilina Love it! And I'm looking forward already to your rant about the slack response!🤣

gnutelephony,

@afilina Messaging companies like slack never could grok collab and voice, while cloud telephony and conferencing companies like ring central never understood internet messaging and chat.
