Mastodon is great, but not easy enough for the masses, and no marketing, that's why the normal user trying to escape Twitter is excited about the "new twitter" founded by the old "twitter guy", and the same reason Threads got millions of users on launch, easy to sign up, easy to use, lots of marketing.
