On Nov. 27, 1978, the late Dianne Feinstein, then the 45-year-old president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two-time failed mayoral candidate called a press conference to announce her retirement.

That afternoon, a supervisor killed Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

Feinstein handled the moment with poise, and went on to serve 9 years as mayor and 3 decades in the U.S. Senate.

    @Jeremiah @TheConversationUS @histodons @TexasObserver she was a shit mayor and we all hated her

    benda,

    @Jeremiah @TheConversationUS @histodons @TexasObserver yeah I can't believe they're going to try to white wash feinstein's legacy with the weakest connection to the assassination of Harvey Milk.
    feinstein was conservative, corporate bought dem. one who was outraged not by homeland security unconstitutionally invading the privacy of Americans, but outraged that they were invading the privacy of senators like herself.
    she fucking hugged Lindsay Graham at the conclusion of Brett kavanaugh's Senate confirmation to the supreme Court.
    her dying days were spent being wheeled onto the Senate floor, incoherently voting as pelosi's daughter told her to.
    rest in hell, old woman. the plastic governor won't let us have Barbara Lee, but at least we no longer have you.

    cultdev,

    @Jeremiah @TheConversationUS @histodons @TexasObserver i wasn’t aware that it was more than once. christ…

    @TheConversationUS Thanks for the post. Surprised to see the article state that she was "never connected to a singular important issue;" her crusade against the CIA over torture of prisoners is legend, and "never authored landmark legislation" is false. She authored the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. Just bc they let it expire doesn't mean you should leave it out. I guess what I'm getting at is there's a cleaner way to say, "Great career but should have retired like ten years ago." cc @histodons

    anitavondannen,

    @TheConversationUS @histodons She died fulfilling her service to the American people. So funny.

    @TheConversationUS.
    My deepest condolences to Sen. Feinstein's family, friends, and constituents. That said, she has done in death what she should have done in life.

    social @histodons

    edinel,

    @TheConversationUS @histodons @lisamelton that’d be Harvey Milk, shot by Dan White.

    @TheConversationUS @histodons Harvey MILK are you kidding me? Harvey MILK was assassinated. What the actual ****?

    How do you not KNOW this? Forget making a mistake. You should know that one of the first openly gay politicians was assassinated. Say his name!

    Edit the error was fixed

    @TheConversationUS As the previous comment said: the man assassinated was Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California. The killer was Dan White. This is a not-insignificant typo.

    @TheConversationUS It's appreciated!

    stripey,

    @TheConversationUS uhhhh.
    Double-check that name real quick.
    White was the assassin. Harvey's last name was Milk.

    @TheConversationUS A remarkable woman, briliant and committed. Not many like her, she'll be missed.

    kamellatate,

    @TheConversationUS Harvey Milk. The shooter was Dan White.
