I've got an #iPad / #OSINT puzzle, and I could use any suggestions anybody has to throw out there.
Back in 2022 in the middle of the pandemic a medical provider in NYC sent my uncle an iPad to attend a virtual appointment on.
I'm trying to figure out how to return it to them, or barring that, to factory reset it so that it can be returned to service as a useful device rather than a nearly brand-new iPad needing to be recycled.
This has proven to be... difficult. #Apple#tech#hacking

My uncle doesn't remember who sent it.
It's not labeled with the owner.
It's locked in some sort of kiosk mode such that it opens Safari on boot and it's impossible to open anything else.
The mobile data service it was linked to is shut off.
I can't connect it to WiFi because I can't open the Settings app.
The only thing accessible in Safari is a Google Meet link, which of course I can't connect to because mobile data is cut off and I can't connect to WiFi.

When I hold down the home and power buttons to reset it, it goes right back into that kiosk mode.
I would love to return this shiny, new, expensive device to whoever it belongs to, but I can't figure out who that is (it's kinda stupid that they didn't label it, don't you think?).
I'd love to factory reset it if I can't return it, so that it isn't wasted. But I can't figure out how to do that either.
Any suggestions for resolving either of these impasses?
Thanks.

@mjtsai apple redesigning the forums doesn’t make up for the company - level refusal to engage with devs except in specific ways on specific subjects.
If you aren’t asking the questions they feel like answering on the subjects they feel like talking about, there is zero point in engaging with Apple DTS.
I literally got ghosted by DTS on an Apple bug for an SwiftUI app.
@1977er Nee. Geht ja prinzipbedingt nicht. Bin bei termius und mosh gelandet, vor allem weil das in der Lage ist, Keys im secure enclave zu erzeugen und nicht nur welche zu importieren.
Honestly had a really weird introduction to my new iPad Pro. After the hour long data transfer was complete I tried using it but it was like walking through quicksand. Games were practically unplayable and video looked terrible.
I figured it was because it was still downloading and installing a ton of apps but even after that appeared done it was still doing it.
After a power cycle it’s running like a champ now. This screen is so gorgeous.
@puls@MuseumShuffle Here on a busy Chicago street I am glad my driver is strict about the signatures. But I was worried I’d miss it due to a dental appointment mid-day. It came just before I had to leave.
I saw this article on Hacker News, and I've never felt more seen in my entire life. I gave away my iPad this year and I forgot until I saw this article - I always end up using my MacBook or my Thinkpad to get stuff done as the iPad is just utterly restricted at the software layer.
#iPad#MacBook#Apple

Marques Brownlee Completely Wrecks Apple's New iPad Lineup
"Taking advantage of all of this power is nearly impossible," Brownlee lamented. All that power and thinness isn't good for much if the old M1 iPad can mostly deliver the same experience for normies.
Seeing the reaction to that terrible #iPad ad from Tim's tweet, made me think of my post from yesterday.
The marketing department is definitely leading these launches - more than ever these days. https://mastodon.social/@darylbaxter/112401659089226854
#iPad anecdote: Hanging at one of my favorite #Chicago cafes, The Drawing Room in the Chicago Athletic Association. It’s a hotel on Michigan Ave so you often see all walks here.
Four devices at the big work table: three iPads, one Windows laptop.
One woman is rolling with an Apple Pencil and writing on paper note cards. Another woman and I both rocking Magic Keyboards, she’s studying and taking notes.
I should point out that no one can get any work done on iPads. 🙃
@chartier Complete non-sequitur from your point but we discovered the Chicago Athletic Association last winter. Can't believe I lived here for nearly a decade and never discovered it before.
And to echo your point, I have a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and honestly, with a keyboard, I can do about 85% of tasks I would want to do.
@jasonmcfadden I liked the mini a lot when I had one here. Surprisingly versatile and capable. Although I’m sadly now ‘eyes failing’* years old and so am not sure something with smaller text will be the way forward for me!
