curious about something. wanna see how big the community on mastodon is. are you a game developer? plz boost for reach

EDIT: i cannot prescribe that anyone is a gamedev or in what capacity. if you don't self identify as a gamedev, vote no, if you self identify as a professional gamedev even if you're doing it alongside a dayjob, pick the professional category. there are no wrong answers

jedimb,
@jedimb@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko I'm going to allow myself a yes on account of finishing a singleplayer blackjack game and a handful of Doom modding projects.

That's infinitely more finished stuff than I had at the start of 2021.

paintgoblin,
@paintgoblin@warhammer.social avatar

@eniko I say professional as I am paid money that I then used to pay off my mortgage because I am programming video games for someone

I've been assured by <someone > that I am not "actually" a professional game developer because they don't go on consoles they go in hospitals

🙃

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@paintgoblin that someone is an asshole, and also wrong

CareLevelZero,

@eniko A lot less professionals than I expected, for some reason, but a high number of people generally in the sphere in some fashion.

AT1ST,

@eniko Voted something else mainly because while I've not shipped a game myself, I'm pretty sure the DevOps work I did at a game company to help them ship a game should count (Last I checked, I was even in the credits under my team.), but unsure if that technically counts as a game developer, because I didn't write code that technically went into that game.

Other than that, hobbyist in my downtime when I'm not frantically doing my job search.

TL:DR; does DevOps count?

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@AT1ST I think it counts

badlogic,
@badlogic@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko does creating and selling middleware count?

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@badlogic probably yeah

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko help i do it both professionally and as a hobby

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@aeva there's no hope for you now

Farbs,
@Farbs@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko @aeva raises hand, indicating both "me too" and "help me I'm drowning"

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Farbs @eniko high five (and then we both drown)

PossiblyMax,
@PossiblyMax@hachyderm.io avatar

@eniko I feel it might be a disservice to more mainstream devs, but I went with pro game dev. My game is just a silly bingo extension for twitch and it doesn't exactly make a lot of money but it pays for itself and buys me a few coffees each month 😅. It's still fun and a bunch of folk love it so pretty happy with it!

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@PossiblyMax totally valid if you ask me

kwramm,
@kwramm@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko professional game dev for ~20 years (should I celebrate?), spending the last 12 years in Asia. Working on my own game as perpetual side project

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@kwramm wow, 20 years in this industry is a looooong time

LeenaVanD,

@eniko i think hobbyist is a term that’s only useful for the taxman, tbh. The work is the work

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@LeenaVanD honestly i mostly included the breakdown to avoid "do i count" questions >_> not very successfully, but still

LeenaVanD,

@eniko it’s a tricky one! lots of gatekeeping has made people cops about it

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@LeenaVanD yeah and a lot of people are sadly cops to themselves :/

cutecycle,
@cutecycle@hachyderm.io avatar

@eniko am I allowed to identify as a gamedev if i am not In The Industry and have no credits, and have a non-gamedev dayjob

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@cutecycle sure!

DerPumu,
@DerPumu@mstdn.games avatar

@eniko I professionally dev, but not games. I do some light modding as a hobby. Does that count as a teensy bit GameDevy?

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@DerPumu sure does!

cobaltrose,

@eniko I mean I studied game design in college for a few years, but saw enough of how the sausage was made (and how ruthless the gaming community can be) to switch majors.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@cobaltrose smart

gamesformusic,
@gamesformusic@tabletop.vip avatar

@eniko

This maybe a language issue, does it mean working with computer games in modern English? Or different types of games are included in the term? 🤔

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@gamesformusic any type of game

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@eniko Hello! I've been almost 10 years in the industry (not quite). I went from gameplay programming into graphics and engine programming. I helped ship two titles with a third one coming up.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/658980/Valnir_Rok_Survival_RPG/

It's great to see such a big crowd here!

daemionfox,

@eniko Are we talking about table top, board games, rpgs, or something more like video games, etc? It may not matter, but I'm unsure which set of folks this is generally addressed to :)

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@daemionfox Are we talking about table top, board games, rpgs, or something more like video games, etc?

yes to all of those

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@eniko It's funny how I work for one of the world's largest game companies, but I don't consider myself a game developer.

I'm even listed in the credits of several games, as the company's big on "everyone has contributed to this" which is true, but I'm a systems engineer who is pretty far detached from the action.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@foo sounds like you might secretly be a gamedev to me

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@eniko I'm not prescriptive; if you want to identify me as a gamedev, there are no wrong answers ;)

superblindman,
@superblindman@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko Me me me me me! :) Super awesome game dev right here.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@superblindman 👍

facemeltingsolos,

@eniko Not a dev, but I work with devs as a composer and very occasional sound designer.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@facemeltingsolos if you make sound/music for games im pretty sure that makes you a game developer >_>

batichi,
@batichi@masto.batichi.net avatar

@eniko I'm skilled professionally, but most of my work is whatever I build cause my work is boring corporate 'games'

Atridas,
@Atridas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko why is this supposed to be so hard?
You make games, even indirectly? You are a game Dev
You earn money from it? You are a professional

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@Atridas people always wanna make sure they interpret the poll makers intentions correctly when answering even though its generally about self ID

gord,
@gord@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko professional hobbyist

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar
gord,
@gord@peoplemaking.games avatar

@eniko 100% 😰

HauntedOwlbear,
@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe avatar

@eniko somewhere between professional and hobbyist. It makes up half to a third of my annual income, mostly contracting to do internal docs, solving really specific compatibility issues, or writing example games for tutorials or docs. I plumped for professional, but it's tenuous, because I can't really point to a commercial game and say "I made that".

HauntedOwlbear,
@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe avatar

@eniko haha, I see several of us are using your replies as an outlet for our professional identity crises.

It's a perfect storm of an industry with a huge number of moving parts, periodic gate keeping of dev roles, and widespread impostor syndrome.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@HauntedOwlbear haha yep. i just dont want anyone to think im gonna tell em they dont qualify for whatever they identify as

virtulis,
@virtulis@loud.computer avatar

@eniko one day I'll make all the stupid websites I need to make and jump right in :(

Unless a voice-based web party game counts, then I guess I am a hobbyist :D

Made it back in early 2020 when it was clear we won't be meeting up IRL to play anytime soon, we still play every week but I never got it to a presentable state: https://shlyapa.online

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@virtulis party games are games!

archydragon,
@archydragon@loud.computer avatar

@eniko I still have identity crisis, as I work as system level game engine programmer, but there are a few layers between me and people who actually do make games powered by that engine.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@archydragon sounds game devvy to me

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@eniko
how should I answer? This is my situation: http://wok.oblomov.eu/ludica/not-a-gamedev/

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@oblomov i mean it seems like you do not self identity as a gamedev so you should probably vote no
