#Nintendo: what? No you can't back up your #Switch save games. Why would you want to do that? You need to pay us for an online service!

Also Nintendo: oops, we have a common fault in our wifi chipset that renders Switches unbootable. Send them in for free repairs!

Nintendo again: What? Oh, heavens no. Why would we retain your old unit's data? We'll probably just ship you an entirely new unit.

You know what they say, Nintendo: trust (and brand loyalty) arrives on foot, but leaves on horseback.

@bitprophet This exact thing happened to our first Switch. Lost so much saved game progress. 😭 Most I didn't restart.

Also while I am on the subject of brand loyalty, I am now shopping around for a (~450W) entertainment center UPS to replace our probably-no-longer-helping-with-surges ~10yo just-a-surge-protector.

We are an APC house but I see that their most recent midrange model is trying to pull some “replace battery? no! replace entire unit!” BS, even tho they seem to have half-assedly walked it back some.

So I will be at least /considering/ CyberPower too, this time.

I also have to admit that "CyberPower" is a /much/ funner brand name to say out loud.

@bitprophet I wound up with a CyberPower UPS for my home computer setup and it's been okay. If it matters, you can talk to it from Linux and even dump information into your local Prometheus setup.

(Everyone has a local Prometheus setup, right?)

@cks I will have a local Prometheus setup as soon as I get off my ass re: inventing a personalized build/deploy regime based on NixOS.

So, 2025 maybe.

Re: UPS: we're gonna get another APC, the CyberPower units all either don't fit well in/around our entertainment center, or have poor 'number of BB-vs-surge-only outlets’ ratio. Alas.

In the end, we went with APC, even the model that they fucked with, since nothing else meets our particular needs and is available in under a few weeks' time.

Be ironic if we go to replace the battery someday and find that the “unscrew bottom, replace battery” procedure is /actually easier/ than contorting the leads within the tiny battery compartment in the older models!

@bitprophet Are they still mostly lead-acid UPSs at the consumer level? Mine's getting a bit long in the tooth but I'd only upgrade right now if I got a decent capacity bump...

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@andrew yup, still lead-acid. alas

PaulM,

@bitprophet @andrew you can drop appropriately shaped lithium iron phosphate cells into surplus enterprise units now.

@bitprophet I recently added a 1500 cyber power to my rack and pretty happy with it.

@bitprophet Now say it like Schwarzenegger: “Cybahpowah!”

@bitprophet oh yeesh hadn't heard about that, but...yeesh!

I'm not thrilled with their slow crawl towards stronger lock-in in their consoles (read as: the Switch has e-fuses because they hate modders)
