An embarrassing multi-million-dollar accounting error that occurred during PM Harper's tenure and was covered up for years at Veterans Affairs #Canada will end up costing taxpayers almost $1 billion.
More than 272,000 veterans were short-changed on pension and disability payments for almost eight years.
The error was fixed, but Harper's govt decided not to notify the affected veterans and not to offer reimbursement for the missed payments.

@gemelliz Pretty sure thats defrauding the veterans. 🤷♂️ The entire framing is suspect for being omissional in nature, rather than commissional in a crime.
Could equally be stated, "Harper took advantage of, shortchanged vets & the disabled."

Be it through omission of facts, biased facts, borderline slander, both-sides ism, parroting political BS with no attempt to verify, headlines intended to trigger, misinformation, disinformation & outright lies. Some reports may be quite factual and excellent, but that’s like saying a pathological liar tells the truth every now and then.

When the Guardian used a photo from a protest that had been shot 3 months prior on a different location (not related to the article) I chastised both the writer and made the #Guardian write a correction. It’s work but we can change the bias by not accepting it. I’ll start reading the #CBC again. So when you see bullsh*t, write up here and let’s gang up on them.
@edgarmtoro@gemelliz I hate Harper and Poilièvre w/ the strength of a 1000 suns, but the problem started in 2002 and was hidden from the Harper govt by VAC (gotta love the CYA game of public servants). The error was uncovered in 2018 and payments started in 2019.
Because the conservative govt knowingly denied money owed to our VETERANS.
The error was hidden by VA when Harper held that dept in a vice grip. He was closing Veterans Affairs offices and slashing hundreds of department jobs to balance the federal budget. Not a surprise the department (Julian Fantino) kept the error under wraps, but unconscionable. A Harper scandal PP will turn into a PMJT scandal.
To be clear, the appalling decision to hide the error was made by the Harper conservative government. Harper should have paid veterans their pension shortfall when they were alive, but decided not to.
The decision to admit the error and compensate the remaining veterans was made under the present Liberal government.
