Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI situation. Wow:

greenloopstore,

One might imagine she would still have a case based on how hard they pursued her including restarting discussions with her agents just prior to release of Sky voice. And the fact that the voice immediately drew comparisons to Scarlett Johansson voice due to close similarity.

Effective tax rates before and after the Trump tax law:

Subsidies for the poor? An abhorrent moral hazard.

Subsidies for the wealthiest corporations on the planet? Necessary incentives.

Saw some text online that made me want to turn it into signage. What good are graphic design skills if you can't have a little fun with them.😜

It's fun to blame Red Lobster going down because of all you can eat shrimp, but no one really emphasizes this bit:

"A private equity firm bought the chain ten years ago from Darden Restaurants.... The firm, Golden Gate Capital, funded the deal partly by selling Red Lobster's real estate.

That meant the chain had to start paying rent. That's now a major financial factor in Red Lobster's bankruptcy filing"

VC again leaving a trail of destruction behind them

SkyezOpen,

Eh, humanity is overrated anyway. I’m not an extinctionist, but if we wipe ourselves out that would pretty funny and appropriate.

I blame it on modem algorithms/“ai” crap.

I noticed like 5 years ago that my phone started switching words I use all the time and it just kept getting worse to the point I have to spell out the word crap.

TexasDrunk,

And in the last year or two mine has started to randomly capitalize words that absolutely don’t need it.

Sounds like a great way to get a whole bunch of kids interested in communism.

Hey DeSantis, define Communism.

GrymEdm,

Birds of a sexual-assaulting feather flock together.

wjrii,

The ship’s owner, Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., made what’s known in maritime law as a “general average” declaration, which allows a third-party adjuster to determine what each stakeholder should contribute, according to company spokesperson Darrell Wilson…

A routine practice dating back centuries, the general average declaration marks the ship owner’s latest effort to minimize its financial responsibility in what could become one of the most expensive maritime disasters in history.

Chainweasel, (edited )

These guys seem like colossal pieces of shit.
They also tried to use some archaic law to cap their financial responsibility at something stupid low, I think it was in the tens of millions, and that amount wouldn’t even cover the cleanup.

But this way third parties can get their cut.

NocturnalMorning,

Generally these “patented” products from universities are funded via tax payer money. I am not cool with them profiting off something that is intended to save lives and was also funded by the very people who’s lives will be affected.

Putting things behind a patent wall only hinders progress.

prole,

They are blue areas doing good things to help their constituents. DeSantis couldn’t have that. It’s really not any deeper than that. The cruelty is the point.

Nobody benefits from overheated workers, who are human beings by the way.

Guess what? A significant number, if not a majority of the people affected by this will be immigrants. Republicans consider them both replaceable and not human.

Gov. Reeves proclaims Confederate Heritage Month in Mississippi (www.mississippifreepress.org)

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared April 2024 as Confederate Heritage Month in Mississippi, keeping alive a 31-year-old tradition that began in 1993. Beauvoir, the Biloxi, Miss., the museum and historic home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, announced the proclamation in a Facebook post on Friday, April 12....

“Pro trans speech” is in no way racist.

itsonlygeorge,

I mean he’s already been saying it in public at his rallies, so why would anyone be surprised?

He also said from day one he intends to be a dictator. So again, anyone who votes for Trump is voting for literal fascism.
