Are you a foreigner visiting the #Philippines this week, or already here?

Starting tomorrow, Thursday and up to Sunday, it is a holiday in the entire country. It is what #Christians and #Catholics call “Holy Week”.

  • Maundy Thursday
  • Good Friday
  • Black Saturday
  • Easter Sunday

What to expect:

  1. Thursday to Saturday: malls, and most restaurants and fast foods, and other establishments, will be closed.

Some establishments in and around tourist spots may choose to operate, but in a limited capacity, so please be patient.

If you need to buy something, your best bet are convenient stores, as some branches remain open. But more likely with limited hours (and supply).

  1. Train operations will be closed for 3 (sometimes 4) days.

  2. Regular public transportation will be limited.

  3. Buses are fully-booked because of Filipinos travelling back to their provinces.

Don't be surprised if you find a lot of establishments closed and the towns are like ghost towns.

Enjoy your stay!

I've completely forgotten about Netflix's adaptation of the Chinese novel the Three-body Problem, which premiered last March 21st.

  • Only 8 episodes with a total of 42 minutes according to Trakt.

So, yeah, let's dig in so we can compare it with Tencent's adaptation that aired around the same time a year ago (which was longer and epic).

A game I recently started playing is ToME or Tales of Maj'Eyal. It is a roguelike singleplayer game.

It has been around since 2010, but it goes all the way back if we count its predecessors. It is also an open-source game.

As of this post:

  • There are already 3 expansions.
  • The 4th expansion is set to enter beta testing soon.
  • The 5th expansion is already being developed in parallel.

Give it a try, available in Linux, Windows, and OSX. (Also available via Steam.)

Check the official website for screenshots, videos, and more information!

A bit of history based on what I was able to find:

  • Originally named: Tales of Middle-Earth: The Fourth Age. Set 122 years after the fall of Sauron.
  • In 2010-11-21, the game setting was changed entirely into a new one. See: https://te4.org/news?page=27
  • Its predecessor was “Tales of Middle Earth”. See: https://www.t-o-m-e.net

@vasus It is!

And apologies, hashtags are important in the fediverse. ^_^

Hmm… what I can do next time is to not use inline hashtags, and just have it in a separate line. Thank you for the feedback!

@slazer2au Apologies! In any case, updated and moved the inline tags down.

Does the really need to allow foreign schools to open branches in the country or own existing institutions? A lot of foreigners are coming here for better education. They wouldn't if our is as bad as supporters of the move paints it to be.

The way I see it, the problem is the half-baked education. It was only the first step. The next step is overhauling the entire curriculum, but they never did that.

If they do want foreign ownership/branches here, then we should invite the Korean institutions. Why? Even Western universities are coming to Korea to learn from their educational system.

It would be foolish to invite Western institutions who themselves are learning from the Korean #education system. We should go directly to the source if we're going to invite foreign schools.

#Philippines @pilipinas @philippines

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

But, that itself is ironic. Koreans are coming to the #Philippines to study, and get away from the very toxic Korean education system. So, in the end, why invite foreign institutions to open a branch in the country, or to own existing ones?

What we should do, like what the West is doing, is go to Korea to observe, participate, and learn from them. Bring that home ourselves, adapt it to our existing #education system and #culture.

Other things that we can do ourselves: (1) increase the pay for teachers; (2) standardised classroom rules like how the Koreans and Japanese do (abolish the autonomy of private schools); & (3) overhaul the curriculum.

I want to add: drop the “Senior High School” terminology; it's the source of all the confusion. We should change it to: Kinder (1); Elementary (6); Middle School (3); & High School (3) = .

@bookstardust The UK is one. There was a documentary about it a few years back. A UK school sent teachers and students to Korea to observe and learn, and find which parts can be adapted for the UK system and culture.

There was another, earlier, documentary from another country, but this one was about adapting the Japanese education system. I can't remember much about that one. Maybe it was mainland China? Since their current system have more similarities with Japan (at least what was made public).

In any case, Korea is also learning from other countries, and this made them realise that their system (and society) is far too strict. (Was not in the documentary, but it's one major reason why Koreans are choosing to raise their children in the Philippines, to escape the very strict and toxic education system.)

I think the Philippines is in a good position to learn from South Korea and adapt parts of it in our own. Foreigners are coming here to study, which means, we have a good education system that can compete with other nations. The best way to further improve our education system is to adapt parts of the Korean and Japanese systems; not to “sell” our schools to foreigners, or allow foreign institutions to open branches here. I fear that, if we let them do that, especially from Western institutions, they might introduce student loans… which… well…

And if they're learning from Korea and Japan, then we might as well go straight to the source. If we really want to allow foreign institutions to open up locally, or own existing ones, it's much better to invite Koreans and Japanese, than Western schools.

^_^

@pilipinas @philippines

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

Something I just realised today: our current education system was already based on Spanish and American style.

So, if we are really to going to open our schools for foreign ownership, or invite foreign institutions to open a branch here, and they're from the US and Spain (if not North America and Europe entirely) then what new things are they going to add?

It will only end up being a “business”. Since our Constitution requires at least 60% local-Filipino ownership, then the rich are the ones who will benefit from it the most, not the education system, not the students, and definitely not the country.

Again, if this is the path we are going to take, then invite Korean and Japanese institutions. We cannot deny they have superior education system than the West.

But, as I've said previously, what for? We should just go there and learn. Then adapt what will fit in our culture, and then adapt more as needed, avoiding the “toxic” parts.

An example: we should adapt the Japanese requirement for all schools to provide healthy food. If we can standardise it, the better. If the government (or local governments) can fund it, even better!

Let's admit it, overhauling the education system + the curriculum, is not the be-all-end-all. The health (especially brain) of the students is a very important factor.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s education system. I'm fine. So is everyone else in my generation.

It is better to learn from the “best” (if we can call them that) and adapt parts of it, than to open our education institutions to foreign ownership or opening branches here.

An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold. #fediverse #meta #threads

@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@liaizon @evan @Gargron @chrismessina @eudaimon @youronlyone Yep, it was him.

It was first uploaded, AFAIK, in Wiki Commons by Eukobos (I think it's Eudaimon too), dedicated to the #PublicDomain through #CC0 #CCzero.

It was June 2018.

No one submitted other proposals so it became the accepted logo of the #Fediverse. Variations from other users based on the same logo also came out later.

See: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fediverse_logo_proposal.svg

#History

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@liaizon Personally, and the way the term was used, since it was first coined, was any software with #OStatus support (later #ActivityPub).

When there were discussions of having a new name, I ran suggestion threads and polls about it, and one suggestion/choice was mycelial, mycelium. I like it so I started using it myself.

By definition:

  • A mycelium is a single network.
  • A mycelial is a collection of various mycelium.

Adopting it to #SocialWeb:

  • The "Fediverse" is one mycelium network.o, based on ActivityPub
  • "The Federation" / #diaspora* is another mycelium network.
  • #Matrix is a mycelium network.
  • #ATproto is another mycelium network.
  • #XMPP / #Jabber is a mycelium network.

Together, they are called Mycelial Web. A collection of "decentralised, distributed, federated, and open, network". A subset of the Social Web.

A "sister", if you will, of the Mycelial Web is IRC and e-mail, as examples.

So:
I. Web
A. Social Web

  1. IRC
  2. E-mail
  3. Mycelial Web
  • Fediverse/ActivityPub
  • ATproto
  • diaspora
  • Matrix
  • XMPP

By definition, ActivityPub is a protocol to add interoperability, in a social network way, to disconnected platforms. So, as long as they federate using AP, then it's fine. Consider the non-accessible content as "private".

There are #fediverse software with a "This instance/server only" feature. I think every fork of Mastodon software have that feature, only the mainline Mastodon doesn't have it. Other Fediverse software like Hubzilla, Friendica, the Misskey forks, the Pleroma forks, I think even Pixelfed, all have it.

Think of Threads content not viewable as "This instance only" type of post.

If it is wrong for Threads to do that, then one could argue that it is also wrong for other Fediverse software and forks to have an instance-only privacy feature.

For me, that's fine. As long as they federate. Maybe a third or two of their userbase will turn the feature on. That's good enough. 😉

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@shekinahcancook That's correct. However, in their instance, they don't want any mention of “Pixelfed”, so there's that. It is no different from all other non-Threads servers/instances where they “fediblock” certain keywords (and accounts) without checking the context.

It still comes down to, “their instance/server, their rules”. As long as they federate, that's good. Any filters or “fediblock” they add for their instance, that's their rules. Just like any other fediverse instance are doing already before Threads came.

Don't get me wrong, I am not defending Threads or Meta. ^_^

To everyone in the #Philippines, especially foreigners and those planning to visit our beautiful country, make it a habit to:

Bring a liter of water at all times.

The heat index (or feels like) is now at 38°C (I don't know what it is in °F we don't use that). This is still, actually, cool for us locals.

In the coming weeks, and months, it might go up as high as 45°C, like it did in the last few years (even without #ElNiño). 42°C – 45°C is what we locals consider very hot, and there are locals who collapses, or die, because of heat exhaustion. (Watch out for announcements of heat waves too.)

Now, if you're a foreigner who came from colder countries, you definitely are not accustomed to this weather. So, don't even dare assume "you can do it". Bring water with you at all times, especially if you have existing conditions.

Mineral water is highly recommended, preferably between pH8 and pH10 (alkaline levels). Distilled/purified water are below pH6 (acidic levels). Of course, if your doctor said you can not drink alkaline/mineral water, then don't. Especially people who can't process minerals.

Stores in the country rarely accept other bills, even if it is a USD. And sari-sari stores rarely have a change for bigger bills.
