I have nothing against him. There are meanings behind road names, and “Lawton Ave” is not a positive meaning since the US transferred control of the camp to the Philippines.
The camp was originally known as “Fort William McKinley”. It was established in 1901 during the Philippine-American War.
Henry Ware Lawton was killed during the Philippine-American War, and thus, it is understandable it was named after him.
However, after the war and the #US occupation of the #Philippines, the connection of the name started to, allow me to say, “degrade”.
By 1949-05-14, the US officially transferred control of the camp to the Philippines, and it was renamed to “Fort Bonifacio”, in honour of the #Filipino hero, war veteran, first revolutionary general, and the founder of #KKK, Gat Andres Bonifacio.
This effectively and logically changed the meaning of “Lawton Ave”. It is no longer about Lawton's achievements, as that was from the American perspective.
From the Filipino perspective, “Lawton Ave” means:
Mortal enemy #1
Multiple failed attacks against President Emilio Aguinaldo.
First and only US General killed during the Philippine-American War
Highest ranking American officer killed in both the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars
First US general killed in overseas action
As a human being, those are definitely not a good way to honor someone, regardless if they were an enemy or not.
Imagine this, a Filipino tour guide explaining the history of Fort Bonifacio and they're on a bus traversing Lawton Ave. Do you think a Filipino guide will only mention how Lawton was a hero, especially when he was only a hero from the eyes of the Americans?
It is only very important to rename Lawton Ave in Fort Bonifacio to Gerónimo Ave.
General Gerónimo was the Filipino sharpshooter who fell General Lawton.
We should honor General Gerónimo for valiantly facing a battle where the infamous (Filipino perspective) General Lawton was in the midst of it.
In addition, it will be the Filipino people's final honor to General Henry Ware Lawton. Though he was an enemy of the Filipino people, he still deserves respect as a soldier and as a human being.
Renaming his namesakes is an act of respect and honor. We should not remember him as an enemy, no matter his personal disposition for/against the Filipino people. He was a soldier. He did his job. He fell on duty during the war.
Trending in the #Philippines : Most confusing mall.
a. SM North / SM West
b. Trinoma
c. Alabang Town Center (a.k.a. ATC)
d. Glorietta
e. Robinson's Galleria (a.k.a. Galle)
f. Robinson's Place Manila/Ermita
Within my own circles, we agree that the most confusing are Trinoma > ATC > Robinson's Galleria > Robinson's Place Manila, in that order.
SM Malls, at least those they designed directly (not bought), are mostly generic. (Note: SM Mall of Asia, still the largest mall in the Philippines & 6th in the world, is currently confusing because of the major on-going overhaul.)
Ironically, Ayala-owned malls are generally confusing, with the exception of Glorietta (the layout is like a spiderweb). Trinoma and ATC are both Ayala-owned.
How about you? What do you think is the most confusing mall(s) for you?
There are other pending ones in the issues that I haven't worked on. But, other than those, yes, PRs are welcome!
I've forgotten about The Appleseed Project and One Social Web! Since the list is about federated SNS (and not specifically the fediverse/ActivityPub), I'm also considering adding BlueSky/ATproto (especially now there are bridges like Bridgy).
In any case, it's an attempt to find the links and relevant information, and then archive them, so it's easy to find them if someone needs it. ^_^
A lot of people have insisted #Meta isn't getting involved with the #Fediverse to embrace, extend and extinguish it...
... but even before fully implementing Fediverse interoperability in #Threads they're already talking openly about changing its protocols to add features like monetization. 🤔
Text in a screenshot reads as follows: McCue riffed on the idea that fediverse users could become creators where some of their content became available to subscribers only, similar to how Patreon works. For instance, fediverse advocate and co-editor of ActivityPub Evan Prodromou created a paid Mastodon account (@evanplus) that users could subscribe to for $5 per month to gain access. If he’s on board with paid content, surely others would follow. Cottle agreed that the model could work with the fediverse, too. He additionally suggested there are ways the fediverse could monetize beyond donations, which is what often powers various efforts today, like Mastodon. Cottle said someone might even make a fediverse experience that consumers would pay for, the way some fediverse client apps are paid today.
@vetehinen So, basically, both Threads and Mastodon are in it together? Which means, the rest of the fediverse software with quote-posts already, will be forced to implement the Threads+Mastodon method?
BridgyFed for the Fediverse should post as threads if the post exceeds 300 characters. Now it just truncates 500 char posts and people have no idea about the rest of it without any link or context. I know it’s early, but this would be great. @snarfed.org@snarfed.org
@filburutto Yep, different. At least what I've read and the few I understood.
In the Chinese version, I think they used the translation sung by Mandopop singer Zhao Lusi(?), and originally titled “You Are My Light”. I haven't found that version; I'm thinking Zhao's translation cover is also different from PiXXiE's Chinese version?
EDIT: Ahh, found it! Finally appeared on my Spotify. Entitled “You Are My Light” by 赵露思.
You can finish and become rich in #SimFarm. But as a Forever28, you can't duplicate your success.
You can win every single game of #CaesarIII and #CaesarIV, but not as a Forever28.
You play #Diablo (the original) without cheating (especially the duplicate cheat). As a Forever28, you can't even imagine how you played Diablo without cheating.
Most important of all: you still don't like #eyecandy games. Games like #MUD / #MUSH (text-based online #RPG), #roguelike, dungeon crawlers, and isometric games, are still your go to #games.
@jake4480 Yep! Something with the 90s and early 00s video games really attracts.
I guess the simplicity and lore? If compared to modern games, it's too much eyecandy and concentration on learning the game mechanics, than actually enjoying it. I'm not sure, it's so hard to nail what it was with classic games that modern games are missing.
Even in consoles, I'd rather play Family Computer games than modern console games. LOL. And yeah, emulators! Get a modern machine and play classic games! (I'm so guilty of that too.)
It's still a welcome, considering the already escalated situation, wherein, China is just waiting for the #Philippines, and its allies, to make a mistake. We definitely need every protection there is right now.
My question is, since I'm not knowledgeable with the Typhon system, would it have been better if they deployed it in a different region instead of near Taiwan? I mean, as far as protection it can give goes.
Then again, the US government's intent is always more than two, and one of it is to “protect” #Taiwan. It isn't so much for the Philippines only.
Huh, so what other #ASEAN#gamers have mentioned, South-East Asia now have a better ping to European gaming servers than US West Coast (or any US-based gaming servers).
This is interesting. I'm going to expand my test in the future. But for now, the results are the same with or without VPN. I guess ASEAN now have a direct connection to the EU IX and uses the latest technology?
I wonder where our connection passes through to get to the EU.
Here in the Philippines, our connection goes through:
Taiwan or Hong Kong
From there it travels the Pacific Ocean to US West Coast.
From US West Coast, it travels to Central.
From Central to East Coast.
From East Coast to Europe.
If we now have a connection direct to EU IX, then it means we're no longer passing through the US?
Ooh, found this article: “12 of Asia’s most important submarine cable projects”
> Massive growth in connectivity demand in Asia has led to increased capacity requirements, and construction of submarine and subsea cables is growing to meet this demand. An estimated $2.6 billion worth of current and future submarine cable projects are planned for completion by 2025 – here are profiles of 12 of the most important.
It looks like by 2025, connection with the US West Coast is going to be far better than it already is. I guess, from a gamer perspective, we should stick to North American servers. LOL ^_^;; Maybe the EU connection is better right now because there were projects which were recently completed?? But once the other projects connecting us to US West Coast are online, our NA connection will still be better in the long run.
