Got rid of some relays (hard to pick which though, and #FOMO). But the load on my RPi became too much (regular OOMs or Mastodon unresponsive for a minute or so while #Sidekiq struggled) and my storage (#Cloudflare #R2) ballooned to ~190Gb… And 99.9% of the posts and media I would never even see.

@gbraad Myeah, as long as they are not on a relay if I understand correctly, all their posts won’t be broadcasted (I guess we’ll need to trust relays to not add Tumblr or Threads).

That being said I don’t know why Mastodon needs to host a copy of every video and image… If it wants to hide my IP address, it could just act as a proxy, like email (Gmail, Fastmail, etc) do it. Sure, maybe technically they’d know at what time someone requested an image but who cares ?

@elliot Yeah, and in all fairness… It’s a lot of work. I don’t see this working out long term if/when more people join (more hashtags and more people to follow, more instances on these relays, etc).

@gbraad I mean, the wasted storage alone, 99.9%+ I’ll never even see… 200Gb of data (and processing, I see a lot of ffmpeg using shitton of cpu and ram) for… nothing

Talk about not having ads, but if every mastodon server admin has 500Gb-1Tb in storage in s3-like providers, that’ll end up costing quite a bit. And donations just won’t do it.

@gbraad Yeah, agreed. If you want to save space (what I first did)… I deleted media content after 2 days (but then if you look up an obscure hashtag you get a bunch of posts with all their media content 404’ing)

I think Tor option already exists in Mastodon, and I’m not that afraid of getting doxed and what not (I’m too boring of a person I think) but yes, paying $100/month on storage or whatever could be spend on more useful things in the long run that could improve people’s safety or health

@kikobar @elliot Feel like it should be an option. I don’t really care that much if people have a time/date (and proxied IP from my mastodon) when I check a media file.

Those more paranoid or worried could turn on the feature to download the whole internet and serve a cached version.

Just like I don’t use Tor because I’m not that worried (but can if things change) :)

I know I’m late to this but #Mastodon admins committing to block #Meta and their new activitypub project before even seeing what it is or how it will work is short sighted and petty. Moves like this will hurt federation as a whole.

These moves could bring more people into this ecosystem who otherwise would know nothing about it.

If it happens and it’s a disaster fine, but to reject it out of hand? #mastoadmin

Some nice progress; WSL hosting Tailscale as a container, which exposes Cockpit to manage the containers and Tailscale itself (via the container image).

very early stage, but so far happy with how this is going.
