Enshittification of Libby & Overdrive. This was long time coming. This deserves attention and we need more independent libraries.

WhatsApp in India

There are interesting discussions in Bruce Schneier’s blog on security regarding Meta’s threat to pull WhatsApp out of India.

In another context, there was a discussion, in recent past, that some members of Indian government suggested taking the extreme measure of blocking Proton due to a hoax bomb threat that were sent through Proton Mail. Finally it did not happen.

I believe that that Meta will not pull out of India and the existing encryption standards of WhatsApp will not change for Indian users. With more than 500 million active users in India, the stakes are too high from either side.

@adnan @srijit @mastodonindians This. Given Meta’s business practices and outlook, 500 mil ppl matter most to them. That’s a a huge market.

The reason I am stuck with #iOS is not the reason Apple might think it is.

@cliophate Nice insight. Agree with the unpolished aspect of Android and it was one of the reasons I jumped back to iOS after a year with Android. Size happened to be one of the reasons too. From 6A to one of their last mini offerings. I love using Overcast. It has it cons but the Android alternative l, for me, was a chore to use coupled with the size. And every move that Apples been making lately is pushing me to reconsider. If I’m staying with iOS, size will be the reason.

Okay, so I'm going to type out a sentence, and I want you all to finish it, but instead of doing deep thinking about it, just type the very first thing that pops into your head. I know this will be hard for many of you, but try it! LOL

@sarahf @bookstodon Half a mind to watch the show but will eventually get around to doing it some time after the release. The book which I read, when it was relatively obscure, had set such a high bar. The thoughts and the story line were moving.

Best books read in October, #1 -
Terry Pratchett: A Biography with Footnotes by Rob Wilkins

So good, but bittersweet knowing how it would end.

I have a lot of thoughts related to the recent posts about how Fedi (or "Mastodon" I guess, as most people are only referring to Mastodon) has "lost" to Bluesky, and how terrible it is that people are not willing to learn how to be on here, it should be MORE POPULAR, that mostly boils down to two things:

  1. I still think Fedi is the best social media platform we have for an open internet
  2. But I don't feel comfortable recommending people to hop on here unless I am personally willing to be their guide too, and if they are not willing to put in the time

Personally, what made Fedi work for me is my willingness to drop my entire network and restart, and I have the patience to look things up, read documentations, investigate instances. I moved instances four times, opened accounts on more. I don't know if I would expect people to do that lightly.*

*choices are still choices, and we should own what our choices mean, but this is an explanation for why it's Hard to Fedi #NeonFediThoughts

xsecur,
@xsecur@noc.social avatar

@geraineon making a mental note of your valid points so that I can air that to my normie friends group the next time they ask me why I chose to opt out and why I am still cautious in what I use. This is despite having no competitive tech knowledge but decently savvy enough to read, understand and do things if necessary. Safety, nope. Forum, Open, Old Internet, hell yeah. And no, this is not about nostalgia or going with the flow but just but owning what you do.

Waiting for a size comparison of the Pixel 8 with the Pixel 7 and 6. The latest is smaller than the P7 which was smaller than the P6. Just go old school and stack one on top of the other!

And imagine how much smaller the Pixel 8a could be?

    The only time Firefox Nightly isn't the better browser is on Android.

    Mozilla does not know how to develop a full web browser for mobile devices. - I wish they did.

    I use Mozilla Firefox Focus for my private browsing...i.e.... Those quick, random searches that I don't want to be sold on, just because I looked up a recipe once.

    But Firefox Nightly on Android would sometimes remember those private browser searches or keep them open even after I closed the browser.

    Firefox Focus was better.

    @Linux_Is_Best @Solarinas How does Mull compare? Or is not relevant?

    xsecur,
    @xsecur@noc.social avatar

    @Solarinas @Linux_Is_Best I use it for the rare looking up of stuff online in my #android device now. But I agree how bumpy their development history is and the fact that is maintained by one dev isn’t reassuring. Focus used to be my go-to when I was in iOS. I miss how it easy was to use it and the throwaway lookups it provided. Had it included an adblock it would have been perfect!

    @Linux_Is_Best @Solarinas Woah! This is something I would like to check out then.

    @Linux_Is_Best @Solarinas I’ve been using Obtanium to update the app in my app and haven’t looked back since instead of the hassle of having to check their source website for the updates. I’m glad that it’s still being developed.

    xsecur,
    @xsecur@noc.social avatar

    @Linux_Is_Best @Solarinas I strongly believe it deserves more recognition than it has for what it offers. It’s not an easy job maintaining a browser and it is great to see some efforts in this direction.
