My personal email has accrued a bit over 5,000 Unreads, probably 97% spam.

Rather than go over it with a fine toothed comb, there are several primary offenders which are all going in the trash and/or being unsubscribed from... because I didn't want the emails to begin with.

I keep my work email immaculate. I can count spam during a month on one hand.

Difference being? My work email isn't "out there" on mailing lists.

Screw marketing mailing lists. I never use them, I do not want to see them.

Oh my god... that guy doing the spam messages is STILL at it

Almost 100% certain it's a person of Japanese origin, since 1) the original message I received is in Japanese and 2) the person seems to be using modern Japanese-lingo.

Can some cybersecurity ppl just investigate what the hek is going on with this person now?

Currently sleeping the sleep of the righteous, @andrew was up way too late building tools to fend off the current wave of fedi spam, playing whack-a-mole with bad accounts, and getting fedi friends up and running with their own blocklists.

I’d like to convene a discussion this week or next to do a mini retro on this attack and some work around fedi spam fighting tools. If you’re interested in the discussion, @ me your email or send one to spamretro at hypatia dot ca and I’ll loop you in on it 🙏

Would love to have a proper UR/UX person on the call, I’m a mere amateur at that part 😅

and other or folks

I do wonder if anybody's got some kind of summarization of the waves we've been seeing.

Where the frivolous accounts are coming from,

any kind of analysis on content - cuz it does seem to be similar, though not identical, in most instances

or even some kind of data-driven explanation of what they're targeting.

The more I look at it the more I wonder if there's a bigger goal than just filling the with crap.

There's a significant wave floating through the right now.

On behalf of all of 's mods and admins, we thank you for reporting them where they crop up.

It's hard to play whack-a-mole, because these spammers are popping up on random one-off instances and known, well-established ones.

before the decade is out we're gonna need browser plugins that can read AI video metadata to verify anything actually is real or not anymore

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWP6z0hvw1M

wholesomedonut,
@wholesomedonut@fosstodon.org avatar

@jnv there's for sure going to be a organic software, infosec veganism kinda thing going on.

That's the best metaphor I can think of for the situation I see ahead.

You're going to have a cadre of folks that embrace AI wholeheartedly.... and we see how well that's going.

And then you'll have a group of people that are so strongly opposed to the very idea,

such that it's a nonzero chance that some groups run whole SDLC's that are completely pure, free from the influence of LLM's and diffusers,

wholesomedonut,
@wholesomedonut@fosstodon.org avatar

@jnv

and overall I think that you're going to see the CIA triad of

Confidentiality
Integrity
Availability

will be more closely regarded and trusted, in these "pure" SDLC environments, in these "organic" infosec environments

than it will ever be in orgs or systems that are influenced by - or, let's be real, grant laissez-faire control to - AI's.

    I'd start prepping now, honestly.

    If that's the lack of value I'm getting portrayed for my contributions, that means that I'm viewed as expendable.

    Especially since "fast and cheap" offshore labor is what leadership is looking toward. Idiots. It -never- ends well, but there's no sense for you to stand there awaiting the fallout.

    If you think that AI could write a text for you, maybe that text was not really needed, nobody will care to read it.

    If you think that AI could illustrate your blog post, maybe your blog post didn’t need any illustration.

    If you think that AI can summarize a book or a long article for you, maybe you didn’t need to read it in the first place (because in a long read, long is part of the experience).

    Yes, AI is replacing every useless thing we should have never done in the first place.

    @ploum that's what I've been saying.

    It's not -improving- life, so much as it is illustrating that there's a lot of trivial stuff in business and even at home, which we have always done, that probably didn't need to be done anyway.

    I could write a big nuanced blog post.. if it was something I actually had a stake in.

    The #Codeberg and #Sourcehut outages are shining examples of why "decentralization" isn't just for code.

    Git itself is decentralized.

    Very generally, both of these services are just an easier way to manage code collaboration than patch emails on a mailing list.

    If you can't collaborate with the same fidelity without the central lynchpin of a given server, you've decentralized source code. Not development.

    wholesomedonut,
    @wholesomedonut@fosstodon.org avatar

    This is why , per what Codeberg has mentioned in previous toots about the whole situation, stands as a potential solution.

    Less of a pain in the arse than patch emails. Integrated with the Fediverse.

    Sure, you can DDOS one single target.

    Good luck DDOSing the entire federation.
