The reminders...they're always friendly.

"Friendly reminder" just reads passive aggressive to me. Just say the thing, don't put some cute spin on it.

Even though I'm staunchly pro-vim, I have to admit that literate programming with emacs org mode is a very rewarding experience.

It's such a toddler move to demand I read the same book for the 10th time in a row, but then proceed to flip the pages before I can finish reading them.

I wrote a quick and terrible post about "perfect is the enemy of done"

https://zstix.io/posts/perfect-enemy-of-done/

TBH I kinda hate it, but (in the spirit of the post) I just decided to put out SOMETHING.

Holy shit, I thought the Windows recall thing was a joke. This is...a real thing?!

I accept that AI is here to stay, but we desperately need some guard rails so crap like this doesn't happen. This feature is a privacy and security nightmare.

stumbled onto a video of Jonathan blow talking about refactoring and basically every comment is whining about how wrong he is to suggest strongly typed languages make refactoring easier???

@NecroTechno people in the comments almost never know what they're talking about....wait a second 🤔

Seeing all these northern lights photos and feelin' jealous. We still have a few hours of daylight over here and I'm worried we'll miss the action!

Google Gemini boasts so much power, but their freaking Google home devices are still so incredibly stupid.

If an alarm is going off on a speaker and I say "stop" to the speaker...just stop the alarm and NOT the kids movie playing three rooms away. It consistently screws that up.

I'm interested in getting some opinions.

When working on a software engineer team (of mixed skill levels), and you need to spin up a new service, which path do you think is best?

zstix,
@zstix@fosstodon.org avatar

@markpitblado solid point, but a novice with an unfamiliar tool (even if it's the right one for the job) can still make a pretty big mess.

In the scenario that spawned this poll, it could go either way, but I suspect the project will outlast the engineers who will be responsible for the initial build.

If the team makes a mess then leaves, it could be much harder to support than a suboptimal solution written well.

Ugh I hate how some topics (music, game development, etc) are almost always taught via a video tutorial instead of a written article. Just let me read!

Oh geeze... looks like IBM is going to buy HashiCorp. I can't imagine how that's going to be good for vault and terraform.

I suspect they're going to change up the licensing, find a way to monetize it, and package everything with a bunch of shovelware.

Hah...looks like I beat hacker news by about 12 hours. 3 of the top 5 topics are about this 🙄

Capitalism is so dumb... infinite growth with finite resources is impossible.

And yet growth is the key metric of so many big companies. And they'll fire and overwork people ("resources") to get it!

Our industry needs to find better metrics.

So hyped for Slay the Spire 2!

Pretty cool that they built it on Godot as well.

My 7-year-old laptop is finally starting to show signs of decay. I've replaced the battery but it's still struggling to manage power (I've installed drivers, bios updates, etc). The RAM is soldered in and the main CPU is pretty outdated by today's standards.

So...I might be buying a new laptop!

Considering either an Adder by System76 or a Framework laptop. Leaning towards the Adder, but open to opinions (if anyone wants to share).

Removed all of the custom css on my site in favor of a minimal css "framework" (picocss). Feels good to have all the edge cases and best practices handled for me.

Next up: actually write a post (last one was 5 months ago!)
