Stories of suburban insanity: there is a gentleman who lives a five minute walk from our place. When we moved into the neighborhood, it was one of the first houses we noticed on our walks because of the holiday decorations.
This person drove old corvette stingrays, I believe? As best as I can tell, he’s had at least two, perhaps three in my time here. He regularly wrecks the car because when someone on the road revs their engine at him, he can’t back down from the challenge. (1/x) #Rockville

illegal gas station update: the charges that my enterprising neighbor is facing are for siphoning gas out of cars and whatever other activities he engaged in to facilitate the theft. his stolen credit card that he used to pay for gas is no longer available and he had to resort to old school gas stealing with a hose and some gas canisters. my inside source tells me that the fire marshall was investigating the property today.

the gas station operator has a court date in rockville in march.

illegal gas station update: last month's court date was postponed to tomorrow where the court combined the february charges with a charge laid earlier in the year. this person also has a court date in frederick next week for reckless driving and driving without insurance. he struck a construction barrel which then hit a worker.

he also got a new corvette stingray, apparently bought from a cop. being that this person does not have a license makes it all that much more ridiculous.

illegal gas station update:

the court date resulted in the dude getting a six month sentence with all days but one suspended. he pled guilty to one burglary charge and the rest of the charges have a status of stet. that basically means the decision on them has been postponed indefinitely. he spent a night in jail and the story continues! interestingly enough, the record of the charges that he faced in frederick has disappeared from the court records online. at any rate, this means our friend is out and about. the corvette has had its engine replaced i think. it runs and holy fuck is it loud. i hear him driving it around.

according to my sources, due to there being a shortage of adderall, this person has switched to methamphetamine! fuckin hell. how long does a middle aged man last on stimulants like that?

anecdotes about cycling to work: i work at a company which is affiliated with the military so we have lots of active duty and former service members. one dude sees my riding my bike to work and marvels at the fact. he acts like i'm doing something crazy.

bike to work day 150k. a friend of mine and i took yesterday off and went for an epic ride from rockville to brunswick. 110km was on the towpath and it was a lovely day some highlights below. we did see a lot of cow parsnip along the towpath. do not touch that plant. @bikedc (1/2)

@bikedc here is a great photo of the snake that was unhappy with me having disturbed it. this is after it struck my wheel once and was confused why the wheel didn't react. it stayed coiled up until we left and then it was gone when we returned on our way home.

at our civic association meeting last night, it became nimbys vs yimbys.

we were discussing a survey sent to the group regarding land use in our neighborhood. being that one can only build sfh in this neighborhood that is so close to transit, the survey is asking if people agree that more density is appropriate in advance of a zoning code rewrite.

one woman told a bunch of stories that were likely bullshit about people selling their houses out of fear of redevelopment. (1/2)

We line up and make a lot of noise about big environmental problems like incinerators, waste dumps, acid rain, global warming and pollution. But we don't understand that when we add up all the tiny environmental problems each of us creates, we end up with those big environmental dilemmas. Humans are content to blame someone else, like the government or corporations, for the messes we create, and yet we each continue doing the same things, day in and day out, that have created the problems.

Sure, corporations create pollution. If they do, don't buy their products. If you have to buy their products (gasoline for example), keep it to a minimum. Sure, municipal waste incinerators pollute the air.

Stop throwing trash away. Minimize your production of waste. Recycle. Buy food in bulk and avoid packaging waste. Simplify. Turn off your TV. Grow your own food. Make compost. Plant a garden. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. If you don't, who will?”

@compost i do find that people are supposedly concerned about environmental issues yet do nothing to fix them. even worse, they resist the changes attempting to move in that direction, e.g. see any battle for bike lanes or increased residential density.

i am one of two people at my office who rides their bike to work. everyone else is in their cars. one scientist drives 2 miles to the office every single work day.
