If your local data store is big enough you can use it to augment your memory instead of looking things up on the internet.

Bonus points if you have been collecting and editing a personal word-hoard for long enough for patterns to repeat.

There are lots of reasons for a home lab or to run services on a port on localhost, but my favorite is having some kind of local mind-space when the net is not available or not to be trusted.

Can we trade Macomb to Ohio for a county to be named later? Maybe we can get Toledo back in the deal.

"Action Needed: Save Your U-M AFS Data"

After 30 years, is finally kicking me off the system.

"Access to the Andrew File System (AFS) is being retired for alumni and retirees. All of your data stored in AFS has been exported for you to save. You will receive a second email by 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Friday, March 1, 2024, with instructions for how to download and save your data. The subject line will be, 'Action Needed: Download Your U-M AFS Data'."

The shortest exit from my house to outside of the Ann Arbor city limits - not counting the archipelago of township islands inside the city limits - is a 20 minute bike ride southbound to Pittsfield Township.

My route is down Page instead of Packard -- a whole lot less traffic. Then across the freeway on the pedestrian bridge at Stone School.

Did I stupidly leave my keys for my bicycle lock at home? Yes. Were there any consequences for that? No, but I need new habits.

"The Algorithm" certainly was around before it was applied to your social media timeline - think of all of those bloggers (myself included) who hacked their headlines to make them palatable for Google SEO and who chased search trends and traffic.

Noting for future reference for Ben - @ai6yr

The maps that accompany the NWS Tornado bot @nwstornado_bot could use a look, on my screen the names of cities are too tiny to read, and the major highway landmarks are hard to identify at this zoom ratio.

I suspect the issue is more pronounced in rural areas.

(Appreciate these of course! Just trying to help on a challenging small screen)

THEN you should follow @nwsdetroit_bot to be weather aware

HOWEVER that is not an official bot (but it is very handy, thanks @ai6yr for putting it together)

The Electrifying Mojo would play Prince quite a bit on WJLB - not just the hits but also B sides and rarities and occasionally entire albums.

Interview 1986-06-07 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0EVcCPOrnQ recorded off the air after a show in Detroit. Prince was 28 years old on this day.

Reading air quality stats. It appears to be that you should look at at least 3 web sites to get a complete picture of Ann Arbor.

  1. EPA "Airnow" https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Ann%20Arbor&state=MI&country=USA
  2. PurpleAir (a sensor you can buy) https://map.purpleair.com/1/mAQI/a10/p604800/cC0#11.7/42.2711/-83.6723
  3. City of Ann Arbor "Air Quality in Ann Arbor" https://analytics.a2gov.org/superset/dashboard/air-quality/?native_filters_key=9uwMAONEJI-UjZnKHAy0dDKl8sMVgd7EukpgbU91M1aWPB-xVURwXR8WzlAfuUgV

The EPA sensors aren't everywhere; the PurpleAir sensors are mostly in affluent areas; and several of the City of Ann Arbor sensors are offline.

There’s a really interesting thing that I think happens when you aren’t using a service or are looking at it from a distance. Your thoughts on it become very binary. All the nuance is lost.

If you aren’t on Bluesky, you might just turn it down because it goes against something you support. If you aren’t on Twitter, you might not understand that people have professional reasons to be there.

The "doorway effect", stated briefly, is that "walking through doorways causes forgetting". It's as though our short-term memory gets flushed out when we are in a new space, so that we're ready for new stuff.
