Look at who has joined us here on the #Fediverse!

It's one of Canada's pre-eminent economists, Professor @trevortombe. As a person who was formerly involved in politics, I regularly relied on his reasoned research and revelatory insight.

Also, it was always good to see a public intellectual hold court and press for a fullness of dialogue in our shared democratic discourse.

So, my advice?

Follow him.

Pro-tips:

1 - Write an intro post (and pin it)! #introduction

2 - Populate your account before you start following people. I always follow back, but empty profiles make me feel sus.

3 - Hashtags, hashtags, hashtags. Use 'em, follow 'em and search with them. It's how you find the good stuff.

4 - Follow, then source the people that your favorite folks engage with. That way, you enter into a network of people.

My mental health significantly improved when I blocked bad actors on Twitter, locked my account and moved to Mastodon / #ActivityPub.

Would 100% do it again.

My Twitter account is basically an encouragement platform to my old followers to move over here.

Oh dear.

I clicked on a video on YouTube (about the mental health of men), and now I'm being fed Andrew Tate and Jordan Petersen videos.

Like, c'mon.

That's no good. That's not only unhelpful, but going in the wrong direction.

At this stage, 𝑰 might need to make a YouTube account just to give a better nudge to the algorithm. I'm not mental health expert, but, jeeze, there's gotta be something better than 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔.

I remain shocked that my 10 year old netbook is performing excellently as a home server.

#Linux saved it from the e-waste bin.

And I can watch my '80s era anime.

• Built-in UPS (the battery), and comes with screen/keyboard.
• Binded an external 4TB hard drive.
• Jellyfin works wonderfully, with zero issues.

• Currently... trying to research how to create an unraid storage solution for my video editing work. Kinda stumped.

Meet Haai.

They're the mascot for #SharkeyWorld, an instance powered by @Sharkey (cc: @ruud). It's a community of roughly ~120 members, and part of the rapidly growing squad of instances based on this #Misskey fork. #OhHaai

Haai is also the Dutch word for shark, and also is a homophone for a greeting (Hi!).

I want to follow the #Meta #ActivityPub mess.

It's going to be gloriously messy, with tonnes of conflict and digging right into the core of how a decentralized community contends with a centralized service.

It'll be the same with Tumblr, the eventuality of BlueSky and other parts of the old web.

On my end, more folks on the #fediverse the better. But how a network for people react to this, and other, changes is... fascinating.

One set of friends called off our Sunday plans due to having COVID. And I just had a friend's BBQ cancel on Saturday because the host and their spouse has the 'rona.

And I assume a month into the school year, transmission is at an all-time-high in the education system. 😥
