I must have been truly evil in a previous life as karma has relocated me to NYC in this one.

The Amstrad Notepad Computer NC100 from 1992, sporting a Z80, 64K of ram, parallel printer port & RS232 serial port.

Runs off 4 AA batteries & one CR2032 for backup.

This one needs some work as it keeps saying the lithium battery is low when a new one is inserted & the stop key sticks, but otherwise works well.

Me: Damn, have you seen my watch? it's fallen off somewhere.
Wife: Is it in the blankets?
Me: No. i've looked but it's not there. it was on earlier but can't remember looking at it for the last hour.
Wife: Why were you wearing it in bed anyway.
Me: I always have.
Me: it's ok though i'll just use my spare watch until I find it. just becareful where you walk until i do. 1/2

Wife: You have a spare watch? and why are you wearing a watch in the house anyway? you are not going out and you have your phone, a clock up there, another over there, the clock on your computer, the clock in the kitchen, the clock...
Me: I like to have an analog watch. Doesn't everyone have a spare watch?
Wife: YOU'RE STRANGE!

@Extelec i have a lateness "phobia". If I have a set time to be somewhere I "need" to be early and get all stressed and hivey the nearer it gets to be the time i need to be there until it gets past the time i am supposed to be there and if i'm not there then i couldn't give two hoots and i get unstressed. so i'm either early (by upto 48 hours) or i'm later than a Norwegian Blue :) never exactly on time

ukscone,
@ukscone@fosstodon.org avatar

@Extelec once i'm late it is what it is. nothing to be done so why stress it.

On which note it's worth reminding Americans that Brits do NOT say:
— elevator
— sidewalk
— railroad
— faucet
— crosswalk
— automobile
— 18-wheeler
— bellhop
— drugstore
— freeway/highway/turnpike/interstate
— parking lot
— attorney

(There are synonyms/equivalents but these are specifically AMERICAN things that flag you up as a foreign devil.)

Me: The tap's stuck

Them: Faucet

M: The tap's stuck!

T: FAUCET

M: THE TAP'S STUCK!

T: FAUCET!

M: I did. it's bloody come off the wall

@cstross and lets not talk about the rubber-eraser confusion when you tell a yank you get issued a rubber in primary school that has to last you a whole year and you write your name and address on it in case you lose it

Been reading about the case of Edward Austin Singh in the UK, a who was caught physically trespassing in a Teesside Polytechnic college computer lab, while connected to various computers, by UK police in 1988.

ukscone,
@ukscone@fosstodon.org avatar

@realhackhistory I used to hang out with Edward quite a lot for a couple of years. Nearly went into business with him after we developed some secure file transfer software. After the Surrey stuff he did a nice "prank" hack on a video store chain.

Last I heard about him were rumours he was working for microsoft. never verified

There is a great book about him called "Beating the System" by Owen Bowcott

ukscone,
@ukscone@fosstodon.org avatar

@realhackhistory yeah. even when he knew he was being watched closely he just couldn't help himself. I stepped away from things but he just couldn't stop although he did try to go legit with an agent and acting as a spokeshacker for a couple finance companies

Depending on where I am and who i'm with i'll use most of these names.

Where I grew up we used 3 different names in the space of 5 miles. At the top of the hill it was a bap, down the hill it was a cob & 5 miles away in town it was roll
