@mondoweiss @palestine @israel This isn't Torah: it is Jabotinsky, one of the early Zionists, who believed rhat the Jews would be continually at war wherever they went. As for the Amaleks, Netanyahu again gets it horribly wrong because no one knows who they were. At any rate, he is a war criminal and wrapping himself in Torah changes nothing.

Zelensky looks exhausted. If Trump claws his way back to power... If Biden stays in power... Ukraine is in hell... in another part of the world I wonder how long the Tibetan parliament will remain in exile... then my thoughts return to the southern border and how acutely awful for people desperate for asylum...

Today I'm translating software content.

Tomorrow I'm flying to Maceió. I'll be in Alagoas (state) for eight days. A few days of rest and sunshine.

And I'm taking a translation test later in the day if I have the time.

@Renata We were in Spain for a week. We went to Extremadura... it is really an unusual place. Thousand year old Moorish alcazars still standing, beautiful countryside, flowers and olive trees

@Renata I guess I should have written alcazares (Spanish plural). The word is Moorish in origin, which reminds me of the Moors long history in Spain. 800 years of Al-Andaluz (think that's right). That region is also full of Roman sites that are intact, such as the amphitheater in Merida. The whole place is a living museum. I love Brasil, too. I spent a year there as an exchange student.

@Renata The Brasilians were wonderful. I was there a long time ago. The military was still in control... it was an amazing experience. I did travel from Sao Paolo to Rio and North to Brasilia. I was in awe...

@Renata @translators A long-time translator on long-term hiatus. I worked mainly on literary projects (Spanish to English) by experimental writers, so lots of experience translating the untranslatable.

@Renata @translators I worked on a book you can access online called The Xul Reader. I think it's most representative of the sort of work I've done. Lately, I haven't done much translation, though I did as an exercise a translation of a poem by Oliverio Girondo (who is Argentine). It was fun. It's somewhere on my blog. And you? What are you working on?

@Renata Thanks for the interest. The book is an anthology. I was one of many translators. I filled in gaps doing poetry, essays, articles. It was kind of amazing it was published by Roof Books. I think whatever you translate requires creativity. It's the nature of the beast.

@Renata It's a lot like finding a path through an extremely dense forest. And you have to be impartial. The material may be a challenge or not to your liking, but the work is neutral in that respect. Over zealous literary translators can get into trouble. I worked with a poet whose Neruda's translation received a lot of criticism. He didn't care. He was a good poet himself.

@Renata He took a lot of liberties with the poems, so stylistically they read very differently from the original.

@Renata I am much more cautious... and have been slammed for that too. But, it wasn't as if I was translating word salads. I had to look after the "sense" too. Walking that line is hard. It must be freeing to think, I'm a great poet translating a great poet and the result will be beautiful.

@Renata I have seen it. It's a way to make a living when writing doesn't pay the bill. Actually, Julio Cortazar has a funny essay about translation in Voice Overs: Translation and Latin American Literature. It's called "Translate, Traduire, Tradurre: Traducir." It's a good anthology.
