Kinship matters! Pierre Benz, Pedro Araujo & coauthors use social network, kinship & sequence analysis to identify strategies used by some ancien régime elite families to preserve power in 20th century Switzerland. Other families lost influence, some lost & regained it. New & OA in SSH

Thank God for baseball. I mean it. It’s a lovely
distraction for me for many months. It might be life saving. Don’t underestimate the value of sports for some people. It’s a mental health issue.

I can’t do politics 24/7.

I chat with my mother throughout almost every game. Maybe every game.

@timrichards @davidtoddmccarty In Cincinnati, there’s a baseball museum adjacent to the ballpark, so you can do both of an afternoon. The baseball stadium is charmingly neo-traditional, right on the banks of the Ohio River. Stay at the elegant Lytle Park Hotel, a short walk from the stadium. It could make for a good story and a pleasant weekend.

@beatnikprof Then you mustn’t be Quaker, Tony. The Friends are extremely fond of second breakfast.

“Education is the point at which we decide whether we love the world enough to assume responsibility for it, and by the same token save it from that ruin which except for renewal, except for the coming of the new and the young, would be inevitable.” ~ Hannah Arendt, Between Past and Future

I’ve been in Paris for 72 hours and I regret to report that walking 16,000 steps per day and complaining about things over 2-hour lunch breaks has immediately fixed my entire life

It is an uneasy lot at best, to be what we call highly taught and yet not to enjoy: to be present at this great spectacle of life and never to be liberated from a small hungry shivering self—never to be fully possessed by the glory we behold, never to have our consciousness rapturously transformed into the vividness of a thought, the ardor of a passion, the energy of an action, but always to be scholarly and uninspired, ambitious and timid, scrupulous and dim-sighted.

In this age of arrogant billionaires and Vampire Capitalism, let us remember that action based on disciplined and enthusiastic solidarity is the only thing that leads to justice and a wholesome society. Happy International Workers’ Day to all!

The Fabian Society is 140 years old. Since 1884 it has shaped the future of Britain’s democratic left. When it failed, early on, to inject radical ideas into the agendas of the established parties, the Fabians helped found the Labour Party, with an openly socialist constitution and a penchant for practical, empirical government. To Fabians we owe the intellectual foundations of the welfare state, a passion for social liberation, and a commitment to environmentalism. https://fabians.org.uk/membership/join/

Between a new federal rule that will make 4 million more Americans eligible for overtime pay, the FTC voting to ban "noncompete agreements," and the DOT expanding protections for airline passengers, there's been a lot of good news for workers and consumers in the last 24 hours.
