@ai6yr I feel your pain and have a pretty good idea of what section of bikelane was taken over by parked semis... lol

I wish TOT had better frequency and service, good on you for taking it! For me with my mega ebike, its either walk + bus, or bike only. Sucks that to get to my nearest stop I have to walk on Lynn over the 101 to get to the mall, not an easy trek. I do want to try taking my bike up to Moorpark train station via VCTC busses sometime.

the stage blocking on this is just phenomenal

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@gobborg @gsuberland check out this POV from previous year's competition, so many cool details for stage production nerds. Besides the insane speeds they wheel things on and off stage, one of the technicians developed an application to spike the stage using the LED floor, so they nail the set placement every time. You can see the graphics on the floor illustrating where they should place the set pieces.

Does anyone in the Conejo Valley area have a radio programming cable I could borrow/buy? Spent the better part of yesterday looking for mine but have come up empty. Amazon has one coming tomorrow but would love to get some frequencies programmed on some new radios I have for my family. @ai6yr @cmgrowell maybe?

@ai6yr not just VCTC busses! You can bring your bike on the bus to the Moorpark or Camarillo train stations and ride Metrolink for free ALL WEEK as long as you have your bike! Go explore some new trails after your commute!

Neat, our city government has a committee with two bicycling improvements for our city on the agenda for their meeting tomorrow--bicycle lanes and "clear parking zones" to make it easier to see cyclists and pedestrians. I will have to try to remember to Zoom in... #BikeTooter https://toaks.primegov.com/Portal/Meeting?meetingTemplateId=7644

@ai6yr Nice, looking forward to hearing you speak!

Since you're local, thought you would be interested in seeing the improvement recommendations from the 2019 ATP. These are all corridors and intersections I ride (sometimes frequently) and always wish there was better infra. Im sure you feel the same. Frustrating to know this has been recommended since 2019 and we're just moving at a snails pace on even these very basic, not extreme changes.

I will be advocating for more progress this cycle.

@ai6yr In addition, item B is about the new 2025 active transportation plan. We need to be taking radical initiatives on biking in the community, and this is the doc that guides that.

Unfortunately, based on my observations and research, only 10/31 (27%) bicycle improvement recommendations in the 2019 ATP have been completed in the 5 years since it was proposed. Very disappointing performance from the city and I will be voicing my hope for better work to be done in the future.

Either a car or vehicle fire off of the Lynn onramp to the 101 tonight, closure of that ramp in order to back out fire vehicle and civilian vehicles. (video attached, featuring some interesting maneuvers from CHP...)

Looked like just another fire from my driveway, but after I heard a BOOM I decided to bike over. Of the assigned units on pulse point, I see "IV11"... I don't see IV on the unit legend, and can't find anything online. Does anyone know what kind of vehicle or unit that is?

"The administration says that private jets account for 7% of all flights handled by the FAA but less than 1% of taxes that fund the federal trust fund for aviation and airports. The Transportation Department said the proposal would raise $1.1 billion over five years."

Hey @ai6yr , just curious, how do you run your emergency dispatch bots like @chp_losangeles_bot ? Is there an API out there that has the calls? Interested in learning more about these if they exist for my #urbantechnology studies. Anything you have helps. :)

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@ai6yr @chp_losangeles_bot hahaha... interesting... 😏

Ever since I learned that watch duty alerts are about 80% community powered I just wondered why there is no official system in place to alert the community of threats to life and property in most municipalities. Seems like a simple thing to implement and maintain.

Probably the most satisfying thing I've experienced in recent memory: Sat outside for 15m to hear the university clock tower strike 8pm... With my phone's clock open, I noticed that the chime begins exactly 20 seconds before the top of the hour at exactly 60bpm meaning by the end of the full cycle of 20 beats (16 chimes 4 rests) it's 8pm.

Anyways...

Great new research from the Terner center finds that "affordable" housing in California is only as affordable as those that populate a given region. Their newly proposed inclusive affordability measure seems like a good idea to consider moving forward.

Read the full study here: https://ternercenter.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Affordability-for-Whom-May-2024-.pdf

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

From the study as a summary:
"In this paper, we present a new approach to measuring housing affordability—one that seeks to provide a better indicator of what counties in California are affordable, and for whom. Specifically, we propose a new inclusive measure that considers whether a location is affordable not to those who live there, but rather to those who might potentially live there."

Additionally, they released this interactive web tool alongside the study: https://ternercenter.berkeley.edu/affordability-for-whom.html

I'm really starting to get into #OpenStreetMap editing and now have the desire to organize an editing event in which one or two people are boots on the ground, livestreaming their perspective walking around an area in a Discord call while others are editing and adding features to the map as they are reported from the people walking around.

Seems like the best way to get pedestrian amenities - stairs, benches, bins, emergency phones, bike parking, etc - effectively and accurately.

I have been an avid watcher of #Waymo ride along YouTube content for a while now, and I am 100% not surprised that the NHTSA is launching their investigation. Through videos on JJRick’s and Kevin Chen’s YT channels (go check them out) the cars have made a few traffic violations and bend many rules of the road. The most glaring was seeing a Waymo vehicle make a “Pittsburgh left” in San Francisco, not yielding to the cars waiting or the pedestrian on the sidewalk with intent to cross. (1/2)

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

If #CAV s are going to be integrated into urban life, we need to be designing for them in future streetscapes and #mobility plans.

The amount of people that don’t understand why a robot shouldn’t be allowed to bend human laws is astonishing. I feel that the current #AV movement is very car pilled, focusing on speed and speed alone in the deployment of vehicles onto our streets. AV companies and the city of SF have failed the public in deploying AVs properly, but we can work to fix that. (2/2)
