Welp, I've set up what will (hopefully) be a long-term persistent veilid-server node, and now I eagerly await developers much better than me to create cool mobile apps that make use of this network. In the meantime, I'll be playing around with the python API.

Introduced recently at #defcon, it feels like this is a first glimpse into something that will become big and important for #privacy and human rights on the electronic frontier. #Veilid

Now that I'm taking some time off from work, I finally got around to building the final module of my #RC2014 kit -- the Pi Pico #VGA Terminal module. This one is part of the Zed Pro Pride Kit, so the PCB is pink(ish) rather than the standard dark blue color. Eager to try it out with a small 7" LCD panel that I have. Steady hands and a hot iron, my friends.

A few years ago I had solar panels installed on the roof of my house, even though it wasn’t ideally positioned (facing fully south). The installer estimated that I’d generate approx 40% of the power I consume. Not great, but still worthwhile IMHO.

I’m often asked about the cost and when I’ll recoup the investment, as if that’s the only metric at play. But I’d argue that using less fossil fuel energy is a big factor in the decision as well.

Assembled the Digital I/O module this afternoon for my #RC2014. This one is part of the Zed Pro Pride Kit, so the LEDs are clear but when activated they light up in one of the colors of the rainbow as referenced on the PCB. Looking forward to playing around with it!

No, I'm not logged into this PDP-11/70 from my Z80 "personal computer" kit to change my grade in Biology class. But I am logged into the BSD 2.11 Unix that is currently running on it using serial-to-telnet capability that understands Hayes-like modem commands.

Today I successfully compiled and flashed the Zimodem firmware onto my ESP8266 WiFi board for the #RC2014. I did have some trouble getting various clock/baud rates to work without garbling or dropping characters, so had to fall down to 4800 to get stable TX/RX (will troubleshoot this more later). I was then able to use QTerm to connect to the BBS that @Wintermute_BBS runs on an RC2014 (rc2014.ddns.net:2014). At 4800 it was slooow, but very cool! 🔥😎

Finished up the Real-time Clock module and the ESP-8266 Wifi module. The only uncomfortable part was getting the ESP board soldered to the surface mount pads. Managed to get it done, but it was a bit finicky, and not super clean 😬

Good news is the clock module works and the #RC2014 now knows what date/time it is ⌚, and I was able to login to the web admin interface on the Wifi module to configure it 🛜 🍻
