I finally figured out how to filter out words and terms that are triggering for me. Had to do the same on the bird app on my business account.

If you want to do the same, go to the web/mobile site version and into your settings > filters > add filter. There you can enter a list of keywords to mute with the option of hiding the post behind a content warning or blocking it completely.

@mansr Because the pilot needs to ensure the pad is clear before attempting to land, and many times that's difficult to see out the front of the aircraft, so a spiral is made so the pilot can look out their side window to better see the landing site.

Over the course of my 7 years here on the fediverse, I’ve seen a lot of misinformation and misunderstandings about privacy, consent, and the onslaught of innovative new search and analytics tools. There’s a new one making the rounds and I wrote something up in response to a discussion on the topic.

Let me first say that yes, I think people should have the ability to consent to how their data is used. The reality is that doesn’t comport with, well, reality. We in the fediverse live behind a thin veneer of privacy, often relying on people doing unscrupulous things with fedi-data to be shamed into shutting down their service. But the reality is that doesn’t really protect our data. Not really. The fedivsere is an open ecosystem. It provides tools and abilities to better protect your information, tools and abilities that don’t make sense for other social media platforms to have because it hinders their ability to make money. But while those tools are available, they are not the default here.

This is something I just wrote for those that are concerned about their information being indexed, or analyzed, or otherwise used by one of the new analytics services. It’s Mastodon-centric and a few of the features are only available in the glitch-soc fork:

Enable “require follow requests”
Enable “hide your social graph”
Enable “opt out of search engine indexing”
Enable “hide your followers count”
Block and then unblock anyone that follows you whom you do not trust to not use a service like this so that they are no longer following you
Remove anything from your profile that you aren’t comfortable being collected and analyzed. For things you would like followers to see, create a followers only post with that info any pin it to the top of your timeline.
Going forward, ensure post visibility is set to “followers only” any time you post something that you don’t want to be analyzed

I'm going to state this now. Outside of what is absolutely necessary for me to use Mastodon, I do not consent to any indexing, metrics, or analytics of any data I have created, posted, tooted, or even re-tooted. replied to, or any other method or means of data creation.

That said, (and, even though I know that statement lacks any legal, moral, or any other kind of teeth, I feel better for saying it, at least) I know my shit's going to be indexed, metricised, and analyzed, and I don't like it... but it is, in a way, a fact of life.

My only choice is to ensure that I only put out there what I want others to see.

I just read something that disturbed me - not in a social outrage way, but in a "Why does anyone want to do this?" way.

Someone is pushing a product that introduces analytics into mastodon.

It's my thought and feeling that, as soon as this platform has user analytics, that's when I'm out. Who will get paid for the data these analytics scrape out of the platform, and to what end? Advertising? Marketing? WHY would anyone want analytics on this platform?

Google used to JUST be a search engine, then someone got the idea that it'd be more profitable if it could track and sell information about what people searched for.

Is that what's happening here?

@jerry @KI5SMN The part that bothers me is that, if someone starts pulling analytics, there's no way for anyone else to know they're doing it. All of these posts I've made are world-readable. If someone wanted to index and evaluate, they could do so completely without my knowledge OR CONSENT.
I'm with sparseMatrix on this - any platform which allows such indexing without notice or consent will not be patronized by me.

Hamsters sit.
Snakes do not.
Armadillos curl up into a ball - maybe that's their version of sitting?
Cows don't sit, except when they're getting up from lying down. (this includes bulls, too.. Using "cow" in the general sense to describe the species, like we use "mankind").
Monkeys and apes definitely sit.
I've seen a koala sit before.
Spiders don't, nor do shrimp, crabs, or lobsters.
Paramecia do not sit.

Motherfuckers soon start realizing that we've curated a left-leaning space and one reason it's so nice and pleasant here (relatively-speaking) is that we've ostracized and treated right-wing fascist provacateurs like the cancer they are.

As for me, I replaced the crummy MDF floor trim in a bathroom that got damaged and replaced it with solid wood trim and got it all painted. I fixed my broken dishwasher (how did we live before YouTube?), debugged a bunch of nuisance issues with infosec.exchange most of which turned out to be crowdsec induced, set up a redundant streaming server for Infosec.exchange, and I got about half way done installing the matrix synapse server to help drive some automation and better alerting/visibility.

Do you lose focus or get overloaded by background noise? #AskingAutistics

I have 2 dehumidifiers that sound like white noise machines, plus the fridge makes noise, the AC turns on.

When I have my noise cancelling earbuds in and everything is silent, I can focus so much better. Work more, and absorb my course videos. As soon as I take them out it’s like ahhhhh can’t do anything.

I’m assuming it’s an autistic thing.

Stable background noise (radio static, fans, blowers, etc...) do not bother me. Background interruptions like someone changing channels on the TV in the other room, or having too many conversations going on around me at once, frustrate me and get me all angsty.
Like last night - I'm installing a new dishwasher in the house so the wife doesn't have to stand at the sink anymore, and the dogs are all over the place and underfoot. I love my doggos - Dachshunds are the best - but when they're all underfoot sniffing everything, and there's three of them, it quickly gets "too much".
I blew up and told everyone to get out of the (^$%^&%$&^&$%(&$ kitchen so I could finish.
Don't worry, the doggos got extra pets, scritches, and treats later that night, but, yeah.
It's not really, in my case, about attention deficit, it's about sensory overload and worrying about people (besides myself) and doggos getting hurt.

Music hits a different part of the brain, I think. Kindof like how people who stutter can sing perfectly - it's still language, but uses a different section of the brain to do, so no stutter.
