Wait there are people out there who think decolonization and class war are metaphors? Woof

🤦🏿‍♂️Utah women's basketball was in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for a basketball tournament. While walking to dinner, racists in a lifted truck with confederate flags, yell the n-word and other slurs at them, and threaten them by revving the engine by them.

At the press conference, the city did the usual dance: half apologizing, but half doing the "I hope people don't think our town is racist now!" dance. Which is awkward, because another white nationalist showed up to disrupt the press conference.🤡

@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@godofbiscuits @watters Nah this sort of thing happens in Spokane all the time lmao. There is nowhere else in eastern Washington or North Idaho where large cultural events happen. So whenever a big band comes to town, or a big sports game happens, all the hotel rooms in the area are snapped up immediately.

The whole area is basically critically underdeveloped but America will never admit this

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Idaho gives pretty much anywhere a run for their money on racism

Am I the only one who finds the republicans in the house quitting a little ... ominous?

What is about to go down that the rats are fleeing the ship?

(with apologies to actual rats)

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@futurebird TBH I assume at least some of it is long covid that they don't want to publicly admit to

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@sabik @futurebird My thinking here is inspired by what another Republican said: https://www.businessinsider.com/republican-senator-opposed-covid-aid-retired-due-long-covid-2023-2?op=1

"In a recent interview, Inhofe told Tulsa World that he had to leave politics because he was suffering from the long-term effects of contracting the coronavirus.

He said 'five or six' other political colleagues have long COVID, 'but I'm the only one who admits it.'"

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@2d @sabik @futurebird I agree, that's why I said in my original post "at least some of it"

I am waiting for the masses of people to become aware of many patterns to do with covid, and this is one of them.

What I'm saying in all of these seemingly bizarre out of nowhere shooting posts is two things:

I know my way around firearms

and

You don't have to own a gun, but you should know how to confidently and safely handle a variety of them

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1 It's kinda odd to me that we have kids in schools do active shooter drills, but during those no one teaches the kids how to unload a gun

Weird that nobody is investigating grocers for anti-competitive price-fixing and profiteering.

You would have thought, in this totally functioning society, somebody would be doing something about that.

Unless... 🙃

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@PacificNic Around here the Public Market is a bit of a tourist trap these days, but it was originally set up by citizen activists to let farmers sell directly to consumers as a way to circumvent predatory distributors.

Of course, all of those old farms are suburbs now so there would really be no way to go back to this system. But it's nice to think about.

@maggiejk @MikeDunnAuthor When I first started seeing a lot of zoomers at protests I was like holy shit these folks are going hard. Like few people my age were so naturally ready to throw shit at cops.

I asked a couple about this and they were like "well... we've been doing active shooter drills where they trained us to throw improvised weapons since we were like 6."

Gotta love using archive dot org to access websites about the history of cryptography and informatics which have been domain squatted and replaced with ads for online poker

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

Seriously archive dot org may be the most important thing to come out of the 90's, 00's, or 10's internet because without it we wouldn't have access to the vast majority of that old stuff anymore

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

You can make as many systems for sharing free information as you want, but if you don't get rid of capitalism we're going to end up back at the same place. No matter how well intentioned your internet is, under capitalism it will always devolve into fucking online poker ads.

I remember being pretty young and asking my parents—is this it? We go to school every day and then we get a job and go to work every day and this is our lives, forever? Just living each day according to someone else’s schedule, at someone else’s command? This is life?

And they were pretty flummoxed. Yeah, they said, this is life. What did you expect? This is what you do and then you die.

These are the same people who showed my Koyaanisqatsi when I was like six and encouraged me to internalize its message that capitalist modernity is catastrophically, irrevocably broken and unsustainable.

And I just think…a lot of people hold pretty good beliefs in the abstract but it doesn’t occur to them to live as if they were actually true.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@HeavenlyPossum To be fair to your parents it is generally more comfortable & safe to sit back and quietly be right in the abstract, than to actually go out and fight powerful men for what you believe in.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@acm_redfox @HeavenlyPossum @hosford42 About 25% of the world's population still survives off of subsistence farming, and most of those people work fewer than 40 hours a week.

I would totally get into subsistence farming if it was legal and nontoxic but all of the land around here is hoarded and polluted. I suspect subsistence farming has always been easier and more pleasant than participating in capitalism, which is why the enclosure movement and things like it were necessary.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@acm_redfox @HeavenlyPossum @hosford42 Hint: when white hippies talk about "homesteading" and "food sovereignty" they are actually talking about subsistence farming.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@mark @HeavenlyPossum As an actual, real life self employed person, I can absolutely assure you that none of my customers are my peers. They all have way more fucking money and status than I do. I'm not even bitter about it because I love the way I live and would hate to live the way they live, but the fact is: None of my peers can afford my work. Due to capitalism.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@ErictheCerise @HeavenlyPossum All of which also, to me, mainly poses the question "Is there some way to keep the benefits of industrial society while not destroying the biosphere and only working about 15 hours a week."

To me the answer is "yes, easily" but many folks disagree.
