A few annoying problems with the #Fediverse could be solved if there were a new URI scheme with the right semantics. I notice that Bluesky has already provisionally-registered the "at:" URI scheme for similar purposes.

So, I sketched out a design for what a "fedi:" URI scheme might look like and how it’d work: https://github.com/timbray/fedi-uri

shreyan,

@timbray Notice that the at: scheme is not designed to be nearly as flexible for social use, and is instead focused only on providing a scheme for data records. So this fedi: scheme is already more powerful, albeit less generic.

Begging instance admins not to defederate with Threads, at least not YET. If you want to grow the Fediverse, you have to start somewhere, even if it's with Meta.

shreyan,

@mackuba lmfao yup lol

shreyan, to random

which instances is Threads federating with?

shreyan,

@mackuba Nice! Seems like mstdn.social is either not on their test list or has defederated them.

shreyan,

@mackuba ugh, any good servers to migrate to?

shreyan, to random

So, this whole Beeper thing's been pretty fun to watch..

shreyan, to random

I have accounts on both Bluesky and the Fediverse, and even Nostr. Yet the way I use all three is very very different.

wait .. do people want notifications about being linked in posts (quote posting/QRTs) or just want the representation of it?

shreyan,

@jalcine I think both are important

Trying out the Sparkles Micropub client! Very nice and minimal. This should go through Micro.blog, and if I have syndication set up properly, to Mastodon, Nostr, and Bluesky as well…

shreyan, to random

checked out a bit of Ruby’s DRb

getting me more and more curious about distributed programming or whatever it’s called. probably time to check out cwebber’s goblins next

Bro does Tumblr even federate yet

shreyan, to random

Does anybody here want a bluesky invite code? Or a guide to setting up a federated instance?

shreyan,

@adrianoesch which one?

I keep hearing this about Dorsey, and while I suspect it’s probably true, I’ve still not seen any evidence of it. Does anyone know of any?

I just enjoyed a smooth and straightforward upgrade to #NextCloud 27.1.1. Great work, as always from the #NextCloud dev team.

The NextCloud web front end showing version number 27.1.1.

shreyan,

@flypig what type of nextcloud install do you use? I'm in the process of trying to set up a nice private instance for my family...

shreyan,

@flypig it's working out very nicely! A tad bit slow, but not very much, so not really an issue. The only issue is that my raspberry pi microSD card might run out of space...

shreyan,

@flypig RPi4 with 8GB RAM. Probably is faster, haha. And yes, I need to look into the hard drive situation :)

north, to bluesky

Fuck it. #YOLO

#Bluesky continues to be entirely non-responsive to the numerous security vulnerabilities I've reported to them, so I spent the evening writing up a nice README and a framework with exploit modules, and just made it all public.

Have fun.

There's no bigger villain than the person who owned your house before you.

To that person:

I'm so happy you paid your friend's brother's cousin who "sort of knows plumbing" to install your sprinkler system, because they did it backwards and now it's leaking inside my walls.

shreyan,

@cassidy lol, my horror story is my shower being permanently locked to one specific cold temperature because the previous owner removed the water heating system

Found on HackerNews, sums up my biggest Fedigripe:
The C2S part of ActivityPub is, to put it mildly, cumbersome. It also shifts way too much logic to the client and prevents an efficient database design.
There can, theoretically, be a "dumb" AP server that implements both S2S and C2S and expects the client to do all the heavy lifting. In practice, all current ActivityPub servers are "smart". They treat the S2S protocol as more of an API, and have their own web UI with a specific user experience.
