Reading about late Stuart politics this morning, and boy does it resonate:

"if the representation of the parties was misleading, this had potentially devastating consequences for the nature of political choice."

Re-reading Memoirs of Emma Courtney, which I hadn’t read since grad school. I had forgotten how infuriating it is.

@jsadow the narrator thinks she can argue someone into loving her.

I am down to 28 copies (as of May 28) of Six Centuries of Type & Printing, a letterpress-printed book in an edition of 425. The book traces printing with type before Gutenberg through the present day across all technological developments. Typeset in hot metal in North Yorkshire, printed in London, bound in Germany, the hardcover book is covered in green cloth and comes in a slipcase of the same fabric. https://glog.glennf.com/tiny-type-museum-time-capsule-and-more/six-centuries-letterpress Some copies remain with Tiny Type Museum slipcase stamping.

I am so tired of my male colleagues saying they can't do something because they're too busy ... and they expect me to do the thing. I'm just as busy, buddy.

The past two years of in-person ASECS meetings were pretty stressful for me. Being around a lot of people, esp c18 scholars, used to be a great joy, so I was sad to feel so drained and frantic in Baltimore and St. Louis. #ASECS2024 in Toronto felt like a new kind of joyfulness and warmth, more even than before. I got to talk to several grad students and ECSs for whom it felt productive and encouraging, rather than intimidating and even vicious, which it so often used to be.

@shandyist@c18.masto.host avatar

@carrideen I was at that panel, and it was SO strange. The good news is, though, from talking with two of the women targeted by this senior man, they saw it for what it was, and they were not cowed or crushed. That makes me glad.

shandyist,
@shandyist@c18.masto.host avatar

@carrideen @jsadow His email was implying that the other panelists took too much time. When he spoke briefly at the panel, he didn’t explicitly give a reason. But he did weirdly claim that his university was ‘terminating’ him and that his provost had stolen his research.

shandyist,
@shandyist@c18.masto.host avatar

@jsadow @carrideen you are correct. He had time and chose not to give his paper. (This is probably clear already, but I was in the audience for the session and have seen his email and 3 responses to the situation.)

A historical word usage question: does anyone know if English people used "cramps" to refer to menstrual cramps? And would that have been a primary meaning of the word?

My guess is no, since I've never seen it used this way ... but does anyone have something stronger to rely on than my hunch? Thanks!

I'm delighted to be able to say that TTU English is searching for a Victorianist this year. Full details are at the link below (which is also where to apply). Please feel free (indeed, encouraged!) to share widely.

This will be of interest to #VictorianStudies folks as well as to Victorianists with interest in #BookHistory and in #digitalhumanities #DH @bookhistodons

And as the chair of the search committee, I'm happy to answer questions if I can!

I heard on the news this morning that nearly half of American children are on a program that helps feed them, and that program will shut down within a day or two if the government shuts down.

So why isn't one of headlines here "Republicans willing to starve children" ?

Actually, to chip out the ice clogging my ice maker. Totally mundane.
