Temporarily staying in my childhood home for a little while, might as well to put my Sonic Mania collectors edition statue where my old Genesis was in the '90s.

SEGA Genesis, 32X, Sega CD, Game Genie, Sonic & Knuckles, and Starflight cartridges all stacked together in 2005

Finally got around to installing a replaceable CMOS battery in my Dreamcast. Hopefully my VM2 will arrive soon, and then I won't have to worry about the VMU batteries anymore either!

Bought some cute pins on a few weeks ago, they really look great! I was planning to stick them on my backpack, but now I'm a bit worried they'll get damaged in the rain/snow so I might stick them on my camera bag instead.

I also ordered some little 3D printed retro computer models to put on my desk. I wasn't expecting them to arrive until later in the month as they're from a seller in Italy, but they showed up last night!

EDIT: I had put the link in the alt text so it the post wouldn't look too spammy, but since lots of people are asking here's a link to the shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MicroComputersMuseum

Sadly I don't think Elite Dangerous is long for this world; I think its only chance of survival now is if somebody like Microsoft snaps up Frontier 🫤 It's clear Frontier just doesn't have the resources to progress that game

sam,

@stroughtonsmith The story leading up to the invasion was really great, but it's gotten quite boring recently. My Krait Phantom can easily outrun the original Thargoids, but I'm too scared to try it against the newer hunter class ships. The one that abducts your passengers sounds terrifying, especially in VR! I might give it a go for Halloween, I guess.

Exploring the titans could be interesting in VR, but I can't be bothered to do all the engineering against their caustic weapons 😅

sam,

@stroughtonsmith Yeah, the interiors in Star Citizen are really nice! I've got the ambulance variant of the Anvil Pisces, and a Origin 315p with a useless tractor beam they still haven't implemented, and the cargo bay still goes down too far and knocks the ship over 😝

I can't bring myself to invest too much time into the game until they stop wiping the progress every few months, though. It will probably be a lot of fun if they ever finish it.

sam,

@stroughtonsmith oh nice, I'll have to try it out in the next update! Still need them to fix the cargo bay, though, so I don't have to stack the boxes up in the 315p's bathroom or on the ambulance's medical bed 🤣

Since visionOS doesn't have hand controllers, it's much more suited to seated VR gaming with a gamepad than anything involving roomscale. But there are some games that could provide an incredible seated VR experience if Apple could convince them (or similar) to port — like Microsoft Flight Simulator, space sims like Elite Dangerous, racing sims, etc.

Since the M2 is a known, static hardware target, with a guaranteed large SSD, it does allow developers to optimize for high frame rates and I/O.

Elite Dangerous. Seated in cockpit of Sidewinder spacecraft, glowing orange holographic HUD, skimming the top of a planetary ring asteroid field, targeting a mining location
Project Cars 2. First-person racing experience on a wet countryside road

sam,

@stroughtonsmith MSFS is incredible in VR, I just wish I had a more powerful CPU to crank up the photogrammetry draw distance settings! I'll give it another try when the next version gets released, it's supposed to have better multi-threading performance.

You know what, after spending a few days reintroducing myself to PC-based VR, the two primary ecosystems (Oculus & SteamVR) have veeery little going for them. I think an app-based approach like visionOS provides so many more opportunities. If you want to e.g. watch a movie, you can just watch a movie. You don't have to download some teenage game dev's asset store hodgepodge fake cinema environment with cutesy developer art textures, and spend 60 seconds loading in to it

sam,

@stroughtonsmith I quite like the virtual environments in Bigscreen and Virtual Desktop for watching videos, they're a lot nicer than my actual apartment 😝 But for static stuff like photos, 3D models, etc. I do miss the ability to just pull them into the WMR environment and have them floating around the home environment. Hopefully the competition from Apple will finally push Meta to make the Quest home environment a little more useful.

Dug the Rift out of storage for the first time in years and investigated the current state of Oculus on PC (spoiler: miserable), but did install Horizon Worlds and accidentally found myself in a laser tag arena with a bunch of real people running around shooting each other and chatting over the mic. It was a surprisingly fun discovery.

Of course, such an experience is only possible with hand controllers, so not something I expect to see on visionOS 🫤

sam,

@stroughtonsmith I watched the Meta Connect keynote in Horizon Worlds last week, the 3D cameras they were using for the live stream looked great! I wonder what their setup was for that.

Last year it was just a regular 2D video stream, with cute 3D animations around the virtual stage. This year they displayed a live 3D video stream on a big screen, and had virtual models of the Quest 3 and the smart sunglasses to look at afterwards.

sam,

@stroughtonsmith Yep, I just logged into the Meta Connect world now and it's playing a replay of the keynote. Says it's available until next week. There's also a bunch of concerts and stuff you can watch replays of, too.

Here's the link to the Meta Connect world, if you can't find it in the Events tab or the world search: https://oculus.com/experiences/event/674951447846205

Way to kill any motivation I had left to finish my game with 1 sentence, @playdate

After an 8 month delay to receive my device for testing, now there's only a small chance to even get my game onto the device's app store based on some reviewer's subjective opinion?

(Yes, I'm aware people can side-load games, but online leaderboards are only available for Catalog games)

Finally! 🎉

Nobody's put together a Macintosh 128k or i8086 FPGA core for the Analogue Pocket yet? 🥲 Community you have failed me

sam,

@stroughtonsmith It looks like there's a minivmac core for RetroArch, but it doesn't support arm64 so I can't try it on my Linux handheld. I'm still really surprised that RetroArch doesn't have an Apple ][ core yet, either!

Switching back to my Time until the replacement Fitbit Sense arrives. I still love the animations in the Pebble OS!

sam,

@stroughtonsmith I still have the iPhoneOS 1.x source for MobileScrobbler, though not really useful anymore since the Last.fm radio service no longer exists.

I suppose it can still scrobble your iTunes music to Last.fm with a new API key, though.

Here's the source zips for every release, and the final deb file for Cydia too: https://www.c99.org/projects/source/MobileScrobbler/

The scrobbler runs as a daemon launched by LaunchServices, so you would have to put everything into the right folders yourself without the Cydia install scripts.

I finally figured out what Mars First Logistics reminds me of.

Its Capsela. This is Capsela: The Game.

@jonty Capsela was awesome! I had the rover with the drill from that commercial, and also a submarine/boat thing with an electric motor, propellers, and floats

There is a long list of 'don’t’s for visionOS: for example, no AirPlay support, no App Clips, no Handoff, no HealthKit, no Widgets https://developer.apple.com/documentation/visionos/checking-whether-your-app-is-compatible-with-visionos

sam,

@stroughtonsmith "If you have an app in the iOS App Store, try downloading it and running it on Apple Vision Pro." Yeah, okay Apple 🤣

sam,

@thomholwerda @foone I wish I had kept my Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, it was a Linux PDA with a slide out keyboard and a QT-based interface called Qtopia. One of the most interesting PDAs I owned!

I also had a HP Jornada that ran PocketPC 2000, and a Tandy Zoomer (Casio Z-7000) which was an 8086-based handheld that ran GEOS on top of a MS-DOS clone!
