This is a decent summary of the octopus thought experiment from Bender & Koller 2020, with two glaring exceptions, right at the start:

  1. We were NOT talking about "AI". That's a paper about language models, and even though other people are (now) talking about LLMs as if they were AI, we weren't and never would.

Just curious, what sets apart the octopus example from the chinese room experiment by Searle? They seem pretty similar at first glance.

These are both vastly preferable, more efficient, safer, more reliable and more plausible than satellite and private vehicles. Their only disadvantage is that they fail to give an easily gulled, thin-skinned compulsive liar more power over billions of people. That's a disadvantage I can live with."

This is what happens when you go from one major streaming service with fees that people consider reasonable for the convenience (same profit model as iTunes), to every media corporation having its own in-house streaming operation, constantly jacking up fees, and being assholes about password sharing

@KevinCarson1 It says a lot about the stupidity of copyright that their supposedly new form of media distribution (streaming) fails because copyright lessens the value of the platforms unless there's a monopoly.

As right wingers like to say, incentives matter, and the copyright mentality incentivises the "exclusive content" mentality.

Ancap visions of a "stateless society" entail taking numerous elements of the present system which are actually the result of centuries of collusion between the state and the economic ruling class, treating them ahistorically as "natural" and "voluntarily," and then constructing an imaginary "stateless" order with the nominal machinery of the state removed but all those other elements left in place as the basis of their "free market" order.

rsf92,
@rsf92@fosstodon.org avatar

@KevinCarson1 could you provide any example? I mostly agree, but having some examples would help me when I use this same argument.

I tipicolly use "IP" which some ancaps defend, to an extent

rsf92,
@rsf92@fosstodon.org avatar

@Siroj42 @KevinCarson1 that's an argument I've made also, but people don't seem to get it.

Both the fact that property implies violence (to keep away from property) and that it might have a moral origin not compliant with the state of things are issues they evade totally (very intellectually dishonest in my opinion)

Classic example of how rent extraction -- in this case the licensing fees -- promotes #Enshittification.
As Thomas Hodgskin pointed out 200 years ago, a great deal of otherwise productive activity never takes place because it isn't productive enough to feed multiple layers of absentee owners -- landlords, private equity investors, etc.

People always forget that the entire argument about copyright and patent is not some form of "property rights" thing, but whether art and science/technology can be funded without them.

I believe they can, that's why I'm against "IP"

Plus, I like my GNU/Linux setup, and part has to be with the philosophy under which it developed (users guide the development of technology)

Sorry but strong disagree here.

As Kevin said, plagiarism is a very different thing from copyright infringement. It's fraud and it's covered with the same law as any other fraud (at least it should/would).

As for sales, there are other ways to get profits without copyright in the 21st century, you can presale books like @pluralistic does with his audio books.

As for the it's mine, if you want a copy just ask.

First, what exactly is yours?

Second, taken strictly, that would ban the second hand market and goes against the first sale doctrine.

Third, I think people have the moral intuition that if you pay to get some work, the author should get a share, the case with Tolkien and LOTR would be an example.

Space-X should be socialized -- possibly by "homesteading" of its workers. The company's operations depend on government contracts, government subsidies, and the freedom to pollute on an immense scale. It abuses its workers and relies on philanthropic notions to motivate them -- but still, the whole thing remains under the control of a single man for his own aggrandizement as though this is his creation.
