Whilst about other things today, I came across the curious attempt by the Corporation to dump all its (OK ‘nightsoil’) in . This was late 1892. Equally intrigued by the counter-arguments raised. Trent-side residents raised a stink obvs (before the real stink arrived) and were vocal in their support. They won the day. Concerns about aren’t new. The indomitable Feargal Sharkey follows solid footsteps. STOP POLLUTING OUR !

Got up close and personal these beauties today. Mid-#ThirteenthCentury wall #painting, Martley #Worcestershire. Exquisite stag, fox, and hare in the #Bestiary tradition. #Medieval #Animals I also recommend the #dragons and the wolf.

Running fox, red ochre on cream plaster. Great bushy tail and classic stylised trees.
Running hare, red ochre paint on cream plaster. Remains of stylised flowers.

I’m gutted at the news of the felling of the iconic at Sycamore Gap on last night. Made globally famous by the scene in Costner’s Prince of Thieves. So it seems churlish, indeed very ‘I have my environmental history hat on’, to note that the Sycamore was introduced into in the 15-16th century, at least 300 years after the 3rd Crusade, the period in which the was set. None of this detracts, of course, from the utter vandalism of last night’s act.

Prepping materials for my new module ‘History at World’s End?’ Planning a around the of the Passenger/Wild in the US at the turn of the . What I’m particularly struck by, and what I shall certainly emphasise to my , is the space & respect afforded to voices in the published literature. And the explicit acknowledgement that practices were so much better aligned to than those of settlers.

For #Fensterfreitag, the magnificent west front of La Trinité, Vendôme, #LoirEtCher. Near perfect example of Flamboyant #Gothic. Completed in 1507. More window than masonry! Hence the need for flying buttresses to support the weight of this immense structure. #Medieval #Architecture

An island in the River Teme, heavily treed, the surface of the water rippled by the wind, superimposed with the pear blossom of a nearby orchard.

Rococo plasterwork. Croome Park Rotunda, c. 1760. I love seeing the striations of the plasterers’ tools, visible only in raking light and invisible to the naked eye. Work both exquisite and exemplary. #Rococo #Plaster #EighteenthCentury #Light
