Why is the CEO of a free secure chat app so focused on "the European market"? Why is there any interest in a market at all?

Smells like there's monetization as a motivator or Signal is very important to our security agencies 🫠

raphael,

@feld Maybe is wishful thinking on my part, but Matrix will start eating their lunch in Europe.

"ActivityPub servers should use IPFS as storage for public binary files like images, video, and audio."

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@evan

Somewhat agree. IPFS makes sense to use as a caching layer and certainly it could help reduce operational costs of a Mastodon instance, but it's too slow to be the main server and it is impractical for mobile clients.

What I'd like to see is the possibility to send multiple URIs when storing/sending information about attachments. This one leave to the client to figure out whether to use a HTTP link or IPFS, or magnet links, or embedded data...

    Due to losing control of our Matrix channel, we are officially moving over to Discord for now.

    It's a shame, but we can't properly moderate our Matrix, so we can no longer recommend it.

    @pixelfed Matrix is federated. Something happened with one room, you are free to create another.

    Your reaction is akin to saying "I had trouble getting my favorite handle on pixelfed.social, so I am going to go back to Instagram".

    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @pixelfed @Mrfunkedude we can do better than that. Let's make a deal: https://communick.com can host a Matrix server for you, pro-bono.

    The US government wants to make sure only they can use DataFarming platforms to spy on and influence US citizens. They're following the example set by the CCP, which has been blocking foreign-owned platforms for years, for similar reasons.

    The GDPR is as toothless as it gets. Tracking did not stop because of it, it just led to every site pushing even more dark patterns to trick people into giving consent.

    If the US does push for something like DMA against Apple and Google, then I'll start believing it.

    @manualdousuario use Matrix. Private, decentralized,"truly" open source (unlike Signal) and plenty of clients to choose from.

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @manualdousuario is Element so difficult to use compared to Signal? I got both my aging parents to use Element, and aside from issues on my server UX is okay. The onboarding needs some handholding, but I guess that it's just a matter of patience and setting the right expectations.

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @manualdousuario also, if Element is too complicated we can ease their way into it via Beeper.

    Crazy idea of the day: how could I integrate https://cupid.careers into the Fediverse?

    If you don't know, it's a "OkCupid for Jobs" site that I did a couple of years ago. People answer questions and the system tries to find other people who are the most aligned with your professional values and the companies.

    @evan , how would one go about it? Make an account that publishes the questions as polls, and internally collect the responses?

    I just noticed that The Critical Drinker is now publishing videos on PeerTube as well as Goggle's ThemTube;

    https://review.peertube.biz/c/criticaldrinker/

    Sign of the times?

    FYI I like watching the drinker's videos for the same reason I like watching stand up by Jimmy Carr or Ricky Gervais; I want to be used to hearing opinions I disagree with, especially when its ok to laugh at them. Also, I might occasionally learn something (even a stopped clock is right twice a day, as they say).

    I still believe that the donation-based model for instances is unsustainable and keeps the wrong incentives.

    Would you be interested in a system that delegates the fundraising efforts to the members of newsie and journa?This is basically what I am launching now with the Communick Collective: https://mastodon.communick.com/@raphael/112283779730502178

    So, I’m curious: there’s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the . For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?

    Are those tools open source?

    I’m mainly wondering about whether there’s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.

    Not fully automated yet, but a short description of my setup:

    • Docker Swarm cluster to serve instances
    • Customer support via email / matrix / website / discourse
    • Ansible to deploy/update/decommission customer instances depending on their configuration
    • Logs aggregated via Loki, alerts and observability with Grafana

    that the @todayilearned bot publishes each new thread on the TIL subReddit to the fediverse.

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @strypey @todayilearned for extra points, maybe publish them to a Lemmy community? :)

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @strypey

    Agree that community discovery is not ideal, but I think you are overstating the issue. Yes, communities can be duplicated. But, because instances contain copies of every community that is followed by at least one user there is always a "global" view.

    Also, the UI sorts communities by their activity levels, so people naturally flock to the busiest ones.

    Anyway, to help with that I created fediverser.network, a crowdsourced database of reddit-to-lemmy. E.g: https://fediverser.network/subreddits/todayilearned

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @Hyolobrika @strypey

    The idea is not to have "one community for everyone" but a simple onboarding guide for those wishing to leave Reddit. Let them come to the places that they are "used to" at first, and once we got rid of Reddit we can start optimizing the new system.

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @Hyolobrika @strypey how did that work out for aether?

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @Hyolobrika @strypey it was a rhetorical question: the answer is "they failed".

    If we know that they failed, what makes you think that emulating their p2p approach is a good idea?

    Fully p2p and "trustless" systems makes zero sense when designing social systems. It is costly to operate and you still need to have some form of collaborative filtering / moderation.
