Australian SCUBA educator living on the Great Barrier Reef after working a tech career in Silicon Valley.

I enjoy technical diving for fun as well as cooking (just about anything), reading (non-fiction, science-fiction and fantasy), running, cycling and games (board and computer).

Spent a lot of time working in technical infrastructure: systems administration, SRE, systems engineering, DevOps, whatever you want to call it this week.

We are repeating the errors that caused catastrophes in the past.

Appeasement won't work; business as usual won't work; there can't be any deals with dictators. Democracies must stand united against those who deny freedom. Shaking the bloody hands of dictators will only give them a sense of impunity to continue their crimes of torture and murder.

This is one of a thousand reasons - no more restrictions on Western weapons. Ukraine must be able to strike back.

Sexual violence against Ukrainian men has become the ‘norm’ for the Russian military - CNN

Ukrainian women and men in the occupied territories and in captivity are regularly beaten, raped and electrocuted by the Russian military.

The publication states that torture has become the norm. At the same time, victims who have managed to return to Ukraine declare that the Russian military ‘openly amuses itself’ in this way.

@skykiss Agreed.

For those who aren't following the history reference: it's like the 1930's in Europe. The general policy of many powers was appeasement. This allowed Hitler to invade quite a number of countries. It wasn't until the invasion of Poland that the world finally decided that maybe something should be done.

Given Georgia, Chechnya and others, Ukraine is this centuries Poland and it's well past time we properly supported them.

Sigh, we see the same thing over and over again. Electric cars start to make inroads and then the automotive industry tries to cut them off at the knees. The shortsightedness and self-sabotage is truly stunning.

It's particularly disappointing to see Toyota, which was a global leader for such a long time in hybrids, fail to take up electric vehicles.

Most BLM protesters were white people advocating for Black civil rights.♥️ All their lives, they thought that they had the 1st amendment right to protest, because they had seen white supremacists march without being beaten by cops. They didn't realize that the right to free speech depends heavily on what you are speaking about, and who you are speaking for.

Now I'm seeing college professors and students learn the same lesson about what US cops will do to you if you speak up for the wrong thing.

psa,
@psa@masto.ai avatar

@mekkaokereke

Free speech in the US is so very selective. It's far from the universal right that many seem to believe it is.

One of my go to examples:

Want to use profanity on radio/TV or show nudity on TV? No way, that's offensive and you'll be fined into oblivion.

Want to send someone a message threatening to rape or murder them? No problem, that's free speech.

On a separate and related note: it's bizarre how many people focus on the inconvenience and not the message around protests.

A lot of Russian troll farm stuff looks innocuous except for one or two lines in the middle of an article nudging people towards a pro-Russian position. It's amazing how many people miss it and how many also push back when it's pointed out.

I highly recommend the "Dark Shining Moment" podcast (it's only 6 episodes), which talks about the Russian campaign leading up to 2016 and some of their history in this kind of warfare.

Flamingo Tongues (the name of this snail) are fun to photograph and look at, but they are a menace to soft corals, secreting chemicals to dissolve the coral so they can digest it. They often leave a trail of destruction behind them as in this image. The snail is moving upward to devour more polyps.

@webcubus When I learned about taking reef health surveys, we were taught that the number of flamingo tongues was a good indicator of reef health (because it takes a relatively healthy reef for them to be supported).

Has the consensus on that changed?

Hint: it's more specific than "you're posting fannies on there"

@vagina_museum I can not fathom the thinking behind infantilising women sexually. A solid bush is one of the hallmarks that distinguishes a woman from a girl.

The other weird one is the war against large labia minora. It's supremely unhealthy.

I love the charming feel of . You can always tell how much of a labour of love these projects are.

(Usually) rustic graphics, lack of hand-holding, fast load times and sense of freedom really sets these games apart to commercial games.

The idea of developers coming together to create something purely fun, often with no practical use except to share and make others happy, really makes me smile.
