i worked on a song on sunday within the limitations of the .XM mod format, so one note column per channel, no resonant filters, no effects, no vst plugins or instruments, no eq or compression, and it felt so freeing to simply work with mono samples and loops I had sampled or generated, finding fun ways to sequence them and let the samples be expressed in different ways, constantly moving forward with new ideas. No noodling 🍜

@ravetracer_22 pick some samples and go for it 😎 there are also tons of modern trackers that can save the hassle of setting up dosbox or other emulation

Okay, Mastodon, help me locate this album I barely remember:

  1. I saw it reviewed in Spin Magazine around 2000. They described it as a not-totally-successful attempt to merge rock with drum & bass.

  2. The band was named something like "Lenny" or "Ernie".

  3. The cover was a Jack Black looking kinda metal guy staring blankly at the camera, standing in a dingy-looking apartment.

I'm setting up a server for @IronChefOfMusic . The goal is to a) learn more about admin. b) create a place anyone can post remixes without having to create an account on . c) archive the existing Drupal site to static so I don't need to maintain it!
The original Kracfive site just had chefs upload to FTP or pass around a USB stick. I think there was also a simple upload form. I'll add a form, too, for people who don't want to create an account 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳🧑‍🍳🥔🥦🥕

I’m old enough to remember when smoking (and smoke) was everywhere, and the idea that smokers might ever be asked or made to stop was seen as absurd. Many kids (including me) got horrible bronchitis every single year and had other sorts of breathing problems all the time. Many parents (and other adults) died early.

@histoftech In the past I might have humored the smoking section at Denny's at 2am after a concert because one of our party smoked. Recently, I left an outdoor concert early and mildly panicked, because it was still a bit enclosed and there was no escape from the cigarette smoke, even with the giant fans that were supposed to help ventilate. It was their final tour, and I'm sad to have missed the end

Here is a question about DIGITAL VIDEO

My wife has a monitor with Thunderbolt 3 input only. That's the "USB-C shaped" Thunderbolt.

She wants to plug a device with HDMI output into it.

She has, already, a card that can convert Mini Displayport to USB-C. But to use this we must convert HDMI to Mini Displayport. We have many Mini Displayport to HDMI cables, but not the other way around.

Cheapest HDMI to Mini Displayport cable we're finding is $60.

Is this surprising? How should we do this?

@mcc I've made sure all three of my past and current laptops support HDMI alt-mode over usb-c. It's how I get dual external HDMI displays working with a single usb-c port. No other display ports provided. I do not have much insight into the display's usb-c input though. Is there a chance it's meant to be "portable"? In that regard? @mcc we bought a "portable" monitor last year that I guess is portable because it can be powered by usb-c, otherwise it's just as unwieldy as any non-crt monitor. Alt-mode simply means the laptop's usb-c port can send standard HDMI to multiple monitors over usb-c. Another little portable fold-up monitor I have works with usb-c to usb-c using the same laptop's port, but it is VERY PICKY about using the correct, thicker, more annoying usb-c cable. None of the ports have any alt/dp/helpful labels

@mcc @glyph my best guess is that this monitor will only work in a usb-c to usb-c scenario, either connected to a compatible apple macintosh's usb-c port or a laptop with an alt-mode usb-c port, or your club3d buddy may need a better/thicker/special usb-c cable between the adapter and monitor
