Writer of queer historical urban fantasy romance and scifi dystopian prose poetry, pansexual, podcaster/producer (#AskAMedievalist), psychopomp, and so much more. Possibly.

I speak a bunch of languages badly. I don't sleep enough. Sometimes I go out and run long distances for fun.

She/they, it's all okay.

#Pronoun #Poll

This is mostly for #Quakers and the #LGBTQIA crowds, but I'm also interested in other opinions.

How do you feel about Cis/Het #Quaker folks considering the use of #Thee / #Thou pronouns?

pretensesoup,
@pretensesoup@romancelandia.club avatar

@RamenCatholic isn't thou a second person pronoun, while pronouns in bios are typical third person? I find this a little confusing I guess.

pretensesoup,
@pretensesoup@romancelandia.club avatar

@RamenCatholic right...I'm only familiar with these/thou from Shakespeare, but they're second person pronouns, like you. So if one were to put them in one's bio, it would be a bit odd and make me wonder if they were making fun of the idea...

Ok, if you're in a book club and the book really doesn't speak to you...do you force yourself to finish it?

Maybe a result of being in the middle of a lengthy and serious writing project, but I've bounced out of a lot of books this year, and a lot of them have been from book club. Maybe I should be pushing myself more, but this isn't grad school, so...I don't know.

And immediately I want to know how controversial it was to be an abolitionist in the early 1800s, given that slavery was made illegal in the British Isles in 1807...I thought there had been increasing public support after 1781...but she had to keep the meeting secret...ugh, it's not really my era of specialization...

(I realize I have a problem. The review is good though! Very interesting points re the editing.)

I actually read a lot of your reviews and enjoy them. I love thoughtful book reviews, even in genres I don't usually read.

At the opera. The woman sitting to my mom's right legit gasped when Tosca stabbed Scarpia. Plot twist of the year!

She sings, "Look at me. I'm Tosca! Choke on your own blood." Bad ass.

#PennedPossibilities 123: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I run a lot. I have kids, too, so I guess sometimes I spend time with them. I read. I sketch/paint. That kind of thing. I have a full-time job, too, but that doesn't always fall under "like to do." But it's not bad, as jobs go.

#WordWeavers 11/4 Do films/theater play a role in your story?

Yes! Sam, one of my MCs, is in some ways Dionysus, the god of theater! In Dionysus in Wisconsin, we see him working on a community theater production called My Kingdom for a Horse (it's all Shakespeare's War of the Roses plays mashed together). In Old Time Religion, he's working on a musical version of Macbeth. In book 3, I think he's working on a choral setting of some scenes from King Lear.

Old Time Religion is a continuation of Sam and Ulysses's story. In March 1970, Ulysses is on the verge of handing in his dissertation when his ex-girlfriend Livia shows up and drops a mystery on his plate. Her husband was murdered by a magic cult, and since then she's been plagued by strange noises in the night and a magic book that may be cursed.

It's 1969. Grad student Ulysses Lenkov hears that something big and dangerous is coming. He traces the disturbance to an archivist named Samuel Sterling. Ulysses decides that he is going to be the one to protect Sam. Soon, they're fighting off demons and delving into Sam's family's weird, secret past while trying to negotiate their growing relationship. And all the while, Dionysus draws closer.

#WritersCoffeeClub 11/1: Best writing advice

"Dare to suck." I heard this rephrased as "the first draft really doesn't matter" at a WisCon panel and I like it. Get the skeleton in place so you can revise it into something good.

Runner up is "if you want to write, you have to read a lot." I've met a few would-be writers who don't, and it's confusing.

Pleased to announce this is up for preorder. It's set in 1970, there's magic and gods and drugs and queer romance, and I did actually write a couple of songs for the Macbeth musical. It's a direct sequel to Dionysus in Wisconsin, so if you haven't read that weird fever dream yet, now is a good time to check it out.

MIL: How was your race?

Me: I thought I was going to throw up. But then I didn't! So thumbs up!

MIL: Do you know how you did? I mean, did you finish 20th out of 25, or?

Me: (shrugs) I left and came back [home].

Turns out I finished about 20 seconds faster than last year, 39th overall out of 167 or something. 44:36 for 8km, which I'm very pleased with. Missed an age group award because W40-49 is very competitive.
