Microsoft has announced a new (preview status) Windows "feature" to screenshot your work every few seconds. So you can look at it later.

It'll remain on device and locked to your user which... in no way makes it actually safe.

The good? news is Ars Technica reports some base technical specs you'll need to use it, so your current PC has high odds of being immune even when it's rolled out.

Also it doesn't record DRM which is the most Microsoft thing EVER.

I love that almost every All Trails review of the place I'm going to hike today is like "got lost but it was ok."

Helps me set expectations. It's a rather small place -- really the worst case scenario for being lost if you can't also use your phone's GPS (which you can, it's got coverage) is that you just have to go find one of the boundary roads.

At NYU in 1970, 150 protestors broke into the computer lab.

When they left 2 days later, they rigged the mainframe with improvised napalm connected to a slow-burning fuse. (two math professors disconnected it while it was burning)

New nightmare unlocked: youโ€™re in a metal band, in the middle of rocking out, and the overhead lights come on.

The crowd pretty much turned en masse toward the sound booth.

The band rocked on.

(Luckily this is the opening band but I suspect from the number of runners Iโ€™ve seen that there are some tech issues)

Well, Night Demon are real troopers. At the end the lead singer was like โ€œwell some nights shit comes unplugged, shit goes flying, itโ€™s heavy metal!โ€ And we all cheered and threw horns because they really did a great job. If Iโ€™d had my eyes closed I wouldโ€™ve missed the issues.

Hereโ€™s hoping they attracted all the bad tech / other luck and Blind Guardian has smooth sailing.

I have been reading the book AUTOPSY OF A CRIME LAB and it didnโ€™t surprise me too much that there was not any scientific data on things, but I was unsurprised and extra angry to learn that:

In 1985, the FBI convened an international symposium of scientists to set its guidance for hair matching forensics. Their report was that you cannot match hair. Hairs can at best be used to exclude someone. Like my husbandโ€™s red hairs and my brown hairs.

Just asked if someone has a portable Bluetooth speaker:

"But if you don't have one, I am capable of rigging up an extension cord, a boombox, a 3.5mm male-male cable between the boombox and an adapter for my iPhone."

Honestly, the thought makes me feel a bit tipsy with power.

"Why don't you get a Bluetooth speaker, Ruth?"

WELL I HAVE AN EXTENSION CORD, A BOOMBOX, A CABLE, AND AN ADAPTER.

Ultimately, students are protesting mass destruction of universities, libraries, and human lives, so it is both much higher stakes than our libraries and it makes sense that the collection is pretty much fine.

โ€œEvery individual I spoke with was there to truly protest genocide, for non-violence,โ€ Bug said. โ€œWe were all actively discouraging any acts of destruction to the books and archives.โ€

@jalcine it feels like the USโ€™s years of working on โ€œdemocracyโ€ propaganda are falling apart as people realize that itโ€™s not a democracy, it never was one, itโ€™s never not limited who votes and itโ€™s just starker again now.

@debcha an exciting moment as I progress in your bookโ€”one of my sabbatical plans is to take a trip to the NY reservoir system and doing some hiking around there!

They donโ€™t relate directly to my work at all, but Iโ€™ve been fascinated by the scale and by having read about their construction as background for a role-playing game scenario once created.

It really isโ€”something to be raised in a culture that taught me some really hateful goals, grow up to reject those goals, and then have the people I left behind get really successful at implementing those goals.

Iโ€™m living in the nightmare world I was taught should be my wildest dream.

TFW there's an update that not only is it a bike lock, it is the specific brand of bike lock (and chain) that Columbia's "public safety" department sells. https://www.404media.co/email/1cc25606-201a-4f10-87ce-aeefa8285c3f/

And back to education/higher education pipeline, "public high schools that receive assistance through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 are required to give the military as much access to campuses and student contact information as is given to postsecondary institutions and prospective employers."

@platypus@glammr.us avatar

this week, some Mennonite groups launched
https://explorepotc.org/ which is a program supposed to help students who are struggling to find a path forward find alternatives to military service.

I am grateful for the effort and hope for the best for it.

On my mind this week -- how this country won't fund higher education, but it will fund the war machine -- which then makes higher education beg for its money through grants.

Our agreements with the federal government are all made under Office of Naval Research rules because they are our largest federal funding body.

platypus,
@platypus@glammr.us avatar

In saying that universities are holding themselves hostage to the military funding I just... I really do not want to absolve past and present leadership of these institutions of full out collaboration.

They're not necessarily reluctant collaborators.

But they've also built up this system where (it seems that) for the university to refuse these grants would be for it to financially implode and there are not other government grants at this scale.

Ok #DuckDuckGo -- I am really curious about this one!

I searched for: david sedaris blood work

because I wanted to see if the piece was online anywhere. The result I got on both my phone's Firefox Focus and my work laptop's Firefox says "not many results contain test, search for david sedaris blood 'test'?"

but the word "test" is not anywhere in my query.

Searching for: lab blood work

does not get me this. Nor do other things I've tried.
