At NYU in 1970, 150 protestors broke into the computer lab.

When they left 2 days later, they rigged the mainframe with improvised napalm connected to a slow-burning fuse. (two math professors disconnected it while it was burning)

@platypus @Markoff ’s stories about how anti-computerism got wrapped up in anti-militarism in his What The Dormouse Said have come back around from feeling like period pieces to feeling very, very timely. Someone should republish (or better yet, revisit and update) them.

@luis_in_brief

you've been excellent with book references, this is in on my to-read list but this bumped it up a lot

@jalcine I’m flattered!

This one is… weird? it’s a little disjointed; in some ways it felt like Markoff had heard a career’s worth of stories and used this book as an excuse to dump them all. They’re great stories! But as a coherent through-line of a book it reads a little oddly.

@luis_in_brief @platypus @Markoff I haven't read, but noticed Malcolm Harris citing that a lot in Palo Alto

@scott @platypus @Markoff yeah, I haven't read Palo Alto yet (honestly a little too grimly close to home) but it struck me from reviews as "Dormouse but covering later years and less wanderin/wistful, more pointed/aggro", so maybe no surprise that it cites Dormouse.
