Back in ’94 I had a roomate for around 3 weeks. He was a busker and performed in various pubs around Montreal. He was, to this day, without a doubt the best classical jazz flamenco guitarist I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. He would often play so intensly that he would pass/grey-out. I knew him simply as “Yanni” or “Yanny”. He played as cutaway 6 string classical guitar. He left while I was travelling and I never saw or heard from him again. (1/2)

Love Obsidian, but for the past 2-3 weeks it would freeze and get slow.
TIL

1. Themes and plugins must be upgraded separately from core
2. iCloud appears to not automatically download all files, or quietly reverts some files to cloud only, making indexing and search in obsidian super slow
   3.Pages with large markdown table with broken formatting can cause Obsidian to become unresponsive for over a minute each time you try to open that page. Suspect this is a bug?

Today started with a text from my son travelling in Japan: “Help, stuck, credit card blocked a again.” Unable to call the bank from where he was, and since the card was on our family account, I was able to call. Bottom line: RBC gave super horrible customer service. Second call for unrelated task with Desjardin insurnace… made my day, best customer service ever... as usual.

RBC is also invests heavily in Fossil Fuels, this clinched the decision to fully leave RBC.

One of my earlier PRs was to the docs, to add a short description for a method that was overlooked in Laravel v3 or v4. I spent ages trying to make sure it was perfect. Then waited anxiously for it to be approved or commented on. Instead, Taylor deleted it and then had some one else do the issue. I’ve not bothered trying to help Laravel since. 😒 Love Laravel, but that put me off in a big way. I now spend my time doing PRs for those that appreciate them instead.

Christmas and birthday presents are now going to be a RaspberryPi with pi-hole pre-installed and simple instructions on how to setup on your router.

Come to think of it, why don’t routers have adblockers pre-installed? You can turn on or off, but have them built in.

If you use brew’s curl on macOS, are you really using it? I installed and had curl setup a couple of years ago. Today it appears that curl was now pointing to Apple’s version, which has this issue (https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/03/08/the-apple-curl-security-incident-12604/). Looks like brew doesn’t add a symlink for curl to /opt/homebrew/bin. Running ln -s /opt/homebrew/opt/curl/bin/curl /opt/homebrew/bin resolved the issue.

Getting absolutely hammered tonight by claudebot from … 250 different IP address. It reads the robots.txt file every 1-2 seconds and totally ignores it.

Bad bots should be charged for environmental damage.

Now using mailbox.org for one account and quite liking it.

Massive red flag from @protonmail though: I had originally signed up to them and found within a day or two that they did not fit my process at all. I made a request for a full refund which they said is possible as long as it is made within 30 days. After 45 days no refund appeared, so I made a second request, and now they claim since it is past 30 days they cannot honour the request. What gives?

Just saw that #Canva bought #Affinity apps. Canva is entirely a subscription model. One of the big things about Affinity is that is is not a subscription model. The way the press release reads, it seems like Affinity will become a subscription model. You can count me out of that should it happen.

Until Wordpress lets us handle their data the way they want, I fail to see that WP can call itself a CMS platform. Main point of consternation is date and future date handling. If I have posts that are set to a future date, maybe I still want to display those on the public area (events anyone?) without needing to install a special plugin for dates. You’re welcome to try and change my mind.

Disappointed that Statamic doesn’t come with 2FA out of the box, and slightly more disappointed one has to pay for it. I get that it’s by a third party dev and all, but in this day and age, it should really be included out of the box.

True story: Years ago a client asked me to quote on upgrading their company website. Straight forward online product catalog for B2B but no e-commerce. Just the order placement from know customers. They balked at the price and said their daughter knows how to do sites, they’d give her the work. Less then 2 weeks later I got a call, “my daughter doesn’t understand how to do this, can you take an hour and show what she doesn’t know?” (1/2)

I have long used backups that are monthly full backups, weekly full, and daily incremental (or sometimes also full if smallish). Yesterday I learned this is traditionally called the “Grandfather-Father-Son” scheme. This was a surprise, at least to me.

Seems a bit patriarchal and has nothing to do with backups. Is there a better name currently in use?
