So funny that I used bash locally and avoided zsh for years for honestly bs posixy reasons just to go with fish.

Still, im not writing scripts in fish. Learning bash has been well worth the continued effort.

It finally happened to me 😭 I accidentally deleted a bunch of files on Linux. Luckily it was on its own disk partition and that was the only one touched. I have not rebooted the computer. What are my options? I'm currently running foremost to see if I can get some things recovered but I'm doubtful. Any other ideas? Tagging @popey since he did similar work recently.

And yes i feel terrible and I just purchased more disk space today. On site and off.

Ultimate Keyboard Control Task Management – nvim OrgMode
I’m sure someone is going to try and blast me for talking about OrgMode and then using Vim in the same sentence, because OrgMode is an Emacs thing not a Vim thing and the divide between users of the editors often seems like a holy war. As I said in my article on my issues with TickTick, I love being ab

nnungest,

@curtismchale @publicvoit yeah what karl said. I seamlessly switch between vim and doom every day depending on needs (eg servers or quickly editing a thing at point). Ashamed to say I'm not very good at all in vanilla emacs lol but Im still a "vimmer" in spirit. Also, there is no war, just jokes. Doom just allowed me to use all of the org features without any caveats.

nnungest,
@nnungest@fosstodon.org avatar

@publicvoit I'm the worst person to ask because I can understand even the thickest accents. That being said I don't recall it being difficult to understand you at all. Also, as long as the accent doesn't really harm comprehension, I find that it adds character to the speaker in positive ways. Everyone has some sort of accent, even native speakers like myself - and it's not uncommon to have to ask other native speakers to repeat themselves.

nnungest,
@nnungest@fosstodon.org avatar

@publicvoit oh hah. As a language learning myself I also have the same concerns when I speak Spanish and French. But I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when I listened.

nnungest,
@nnungest@fosstodon.org avatar

@dpom @publicvoit @curtismchale i think the only non-emacs org implementation id be truly interested in would be a complete rewrite in a language that can "rust" and editor agnostic. Though, for all these custom one off ones i support the cause. I just think it would be nice to have a single thing we could contribute to/improve. From a mentor/lead approach i think the more options for people the better in general

Yes I re-watch @bcantrill talks like re-runs of The Office. It may be shocking to him but Bryan is the virtual representation of the software engineering mentor I never had. I just listened to the talk he gave on oral traditions in software twice in 24hours. It is an absolute gem like all his talks. So thankful for his talks. https://youtu.be/4PaWFYm0kEw?feature=shared #softwareengineering #Developers

Do you manage your server config files with git ? Why or why not?

#sysadmin #linux

nnungest,
@nnungest@fosstodon.org avatar

@outofcontrol if you have more than one server I would recommend looking into ansible or chef/puppet/salt/etc. all backed by git. all support fetching secret values and injecting them into the config templates. Just don't store secrets in configs, well, any secrets in git for that matter. Manage and back them up separately.

I find it weird that #spotify has added apparently unmoderated user created content to their podcast library. As far as I can tell there is neither the ability to hide, ignore, or report this content. I don't know much about Mr. Tate but my understanding is he is some sort of charlitan fraudster. It is downright bizzar to me that a paid subscription service would intentionally subject its users to such nonsense. Aren't paid walled gardens supposed to be safe? Isn't the whole point that I'm paying for good mental hygene? How is that supposed to work if I can't even mark content as unwanted?

i was thinking about my time in japan earlier today and i realized the reason i was happy then was because everything was pretty much taken care of. i didn't have to worry about money but i had a tiny place of my own and i was a 15 min walk from being able to eat cheap delicious food on the university campus. i had nothing to really worry about and a fulfilling social life

i've been alive 40 years and i got to feel like that for 0.5 years. that's 1.25%

Before I go off writing , anyone know how to search multiple projects at once with projectile? Using btw.

nnungest,
@nnungest@fosstodon.org avatar

@howard so I keep all my work projects under ~/projects/work/ . I can do a dir based search just fine, but it usually includes things I don't want. I want to narrow on a few select ones.

I'm thinking I'll give it a stab later and just write a function that searches over a list, as the ones I want are going to be pretty static.

Level 13 of #wanikani !

I'm about to get my first burned items (radicals from Level 1), so technically I should be around the peak of number things that I need to keep in short term memory at the same time! With that in mind, I had what I think of as, a "restructuring" week. A lot of kanji/vocabulary has similar pronunciation so had to slow down to 10 new lessons per day and make a lot of mistakes, but all to get a more solid picture of kanjis!

@indutny so do you feel like it has helped you overall? Has it allowed you to strengthen your reading skills? I can't wait to get to level 30, though im only at 4 now.
