Yesterday, I replied to a question in the Godot forum with a wrong answer (since I misunderstood the question at first). Today, if you google "godot delete pattern", that answer will be displayed as a "featured snippet" right on top. ๐Ÿ™„ (The correct answer is in the same thread, but so far Google hasn't picked up on it)

@Nifflas This looks (and sounds) very cool!l Will try to remember checking it out once I get near a Windows machine again. ๐Ÿ˜… Either way, nice to see you making games again! :)

Today I tried what Geometry Script is in Unreal Engine 5. Cool features, but I won't use it for the game. Maybe only as tools for level design

I've been reflecting a lot lately on just how much the games industry has outgrown creators' ability to properly cover it.

Specifically on the games that are left in the purgatory between extensive & emphatic coverage, and complete disinterest.

I call it 'Coverage Limbo'

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Wanderbot Excellent read! Thanks for taking the time to write all of this down. That being said, I think the solution to this problem cannot (and should not!) be to cover more games. The sole reason why creator coverage has become so important is that there are too many games! Curators act as a filter. Even IF creators found a way to cover all newly released games, that wouldn't solve anything. The bottleneck is at the consumer's end.

Is anyone aware of any data abut what kind of @godotengine resources people are looking for? Like some questionnaire about what level of expertise and what kinds of workflows people would like to see more tutorials on, and in what format (video, blog post, podcast, smoke signals, etc)?

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@godotengine @tracefree Maybe you should add a question (or more) regarding this topic to this year's community poll. Think it would not only be interesting for creators, but also give a good impressions of which areas of the Engine need more love and/or better documentation. :)

@krazyjakee Nah, not at all! I think everybody (!) joined the photo session. It's just that plenty of people had already left at that point. If anyone's to blame here, then it's me for being too shy to ask when there were still more people around. ๐Ÿ˜…

I think following specific hashtags of a profile would be useful. Technically it's like following a profile but the timeline posts filtered by specific hashtags. Perhaps similar logic on Mastodon, to hiding boosts from profile or filtering posts by subscribed languages.

Could probably solve the issue where folks create multiple accounts for different interests or circles.

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@cheeaun I advocate for this pretty much since the day I started using Mastodon. It's frustratingly close already, with the ability to pin hashtags to a profile. All that's needed is a way to subscribe to that instead of the full profile...

Do you think this could be "solved" on the client-side with Phanpy? ๐Ÿค”

djlink, to random
@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

kinda messed up situation because customers are rightfully upset, but we know it's the publisher pushing this, but devs will feel the pain.

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink I kinda hate that Steam reviews become more and more like those Amazon reviews that read "Great product, awesome price, but the delivery was delayed - 1 star!". There absolutely should be a place to note those things, and it might very well be relevant to the consumer thinking of buying the game, but conflating it with the actual quality of the gameplay (as a "review score" suggests) is ridiculous.

Wow! This wasn't on my radar at all, but Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo looks absolutely fantastic. It isn't like Shovel Knight at all, but I want to say it has Shovel Knight Vibes anyways. Very worth a peek. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2870350/Pipistrello_and_the_Cursed_Yoyo/

Just finished watching Brackeys first Godot tutorial video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOhfqjmasi0

I've never used Unity, so I don't have any history with his videos, but I'm starting to understand his excellent reputation: This is a pretty much flawless introduction into the Engine! It will get you to a full game in just about an hour, with minimal coding, while using many of the most important features of the Engine. Recommended!

SirLich, to godot
@SirLich@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

What kind of work do you share between your Godot projects, and how?

Currently I can think of the following:

  • Actions (e.g., quickly setup common input actions)
  • Plugins (some encapsulated tool usually with editor support)
  • Templates (something you intend to edit, like a base character controller)
  • Asset/Collections (some scripts/scenes which you could inherit from/use, but wouldn't be expected to edit, such as ui-components)

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@SirLich I set up a GitHub template a while ago (https://github.com/njamster/godot_game_template), that I use as a base for most of my projects. It's still very much a work-in-progress and completely undocumented, mostly because I'm not so great at working consistently on it, but it's a great aid already. Currently, it entails:

  • screen transitions
  • language selection
  • a main menu screen
  • settings & input remapping
  • credits (read from a markdown file)
  • a pause menu & game over screen
  • input prompts

hi! if you are reading this, recommend me a game. any game you love. now

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gabtoschi Grime :)

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gabtoschi Fair. That's being said, it's a relatively forgiving Soulslike, since you don't lose currency when you die and walking back to a boss fight doesn't take long. The fights themselves are still fairly challenging, though. So if it's the level of difficulty and re-trying a fight a few times that puts you off: Stay away! But if it's just some of the more annoying things Fromsoft titles are known for, you should mabye still give this a chance. What genres are you looking for then? :)

njamster,
@njamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gabtoschi Well in that case, my recommendations are:

  • Puzzle: "Paquerette" or "A Monsters Expedition"
  • Rhythm: "A Musical Story" or "Rhythm Doctor"
  • Collectathon: "New Super Lucky's Tale" or "Supraland"

I'm into "most genres", honestly. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Metroidvanias, Platformers & Deckbuilders are amongst my favorites, but as long as it's fun I'll try just about everything!

    According to their trailer, @Wanderbot described it as: "A really neat fusion of and with ". Nothing to add: If you enjoy any of those three, I'm feeling fairly confident you'll also love ! :)
