I'm starting the initial beta testing for my new hiking route planner, offline mapping and watchOS 10 redesign update to Pedometer++. Any hikers out there who'd like to give it a go, I'd appreciate the feedback. It isn't quite finished yet but it is close enough to be a useful point for gathering feedback. If I’ve missed things I'd love to know now before I get too far into polishing things up.

Thanks!

@_Davidsmith hey David, I thought I'd give you this feedback real quick. I'm really excited about these maps but every time I join the TestFlight I struggle to find them.

I think this feature deserves to have its own top level tab. You would plan a route from there (or choose an existing one) and then star a workout from there.

This would really help discoverability I think.

Over the summer I didn't have time to do a proper watchOS 10 redesign for Pedometer++. I am now tackling that project, which is actually much easier now that I've actually lived with watchOS 10's redesign for several months.

Something I found super helpful was to take a screenshot of every screen in the app and lay out the current UI hierarchy, which when I see it laid out like this is a bit of a mess. But I couldn't tell how much of a mess without the perspective of seeing it all at once.

@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith thank you!! 😅 I was considering suggesting making the text smaller but then I always thought you liked that better and it makes your apps more recognizable. I think they are more usable with the standard text sizes though.

I know Apple told me that I should be getting the M3 Pro chip as a developer and not an AI researcher or video editor, but damn it, I'm getting the M3 Max to run Xcode and edit 4-track Logic projects and there's nothing they can do about it

@marcoarment we love you for it!

I love tech and have spent way more money on it than most people over the years, but one hardware category have never gotten me: e-readers

I like books and I like audiobooks, but I've never once owned an e-reader. There's something about a physical book that just appeals to me in a way e-books don't.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@matt i tried them and went back to paperback books. They are worry free and very focused. Plus nothing beats the super realistic page turn animation. So buttery smooth ;P

sdw, to random
@sdw@mastodon.social avatar

I usually love @verge but this is a bad take. Of course Apple used professional lighting and equipment when taking the video. That doesn't at all diminish the result or achievement here.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@sdw @verge @Gte to everyone who has every held a pro camera, it is obvious, that a lighting rig is necessary to achieve good results, especially at night.

These lights really pro lights and hugely expensive, but you can get similar results by spending way less and being a bit creative.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@sdw @verge @Gte If you're a beginner filmmaker and you have an iPhone, you probably own the most expensive piece of equipment that is NECESSARY. You can always go more pricey, nicer, brighter, easier to handle but that's doesn't mean "shot on iPhone" is not VERY impressive in this context.

Boom, mic drop.

@caseyliss @matt Suggestion: you two get together and implement an integration for sharing a review (in the style of Matt's quickreviews.app) from within Callsheet? Whatdoyousay?? 😁 would love that.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@matt @caseyliss i think you nailed the format though, that's what makes me read every one of your reviews.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@matt @caseyliss Imagine sharing a movie from Callsheet and it prefills the movie poster and generates a color scheme based on its colors.
Can you preconfigure quickreviews.app via query parameters? Or does it save all of its state just locally?

I thought it would be fun this year to draw the inspiration for Widgetsmith's fall themes from the color lineup of this year's new iPhones. For each color of phone there is now a perfectly color coordinated theme. I can't believe I haven't thought of this before, it seems like a perfect way to celebrate getting a new phone.

A yellow theme is shown in widgetsmith against the background of the new iPhone 15
A blue theme is shown in widgetsmith against the background of the new iPhone 15
A pink theme is shown in widgetsmith against the background of the new iPhone 15

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith will there be "color" themes for the pro phones? You could even make it a slider to future proof it, since it only needs to be grayscale ;P

Ok that’s trippy as hell. I used that thing that converts video from one language to another and wow, this is really good (I think? I don’t speak French 😂)

video/mp4

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@matt wow that is something else. Care to try out the same for German? I'd love to get a feel for the quality of this.

I bet this would make a really good YouTube video, if you got coverage of the most common languages...

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@matt really? Wow, that's longer than I would have guessed!

namekkural,

@matt well, it is a very promising product. As far as I can tell it sounds pretty realistic. Do you think it sounds like you?

Here is Widgetsmith's new interactive Music widget animation slowed down 25%. As soon as I realized that this was technically possible I knew I had to get it built. It is amazing how powerful the new WidgetKit system can be.

Interactive Widgets have been a delightful playground to explore for Widgetsmith this summer. I've tried to be as creative and broad as possible in my initial offerings. I've built interactive photo galleries, flippable widgets, a CoverFlow-esque music browser, scrollable weather widgets, browsable calendars, and even a game.

Here's a 60-second walkthrough video I made because interactivity really works best in motion.

@_Davidsmith I love the coverflow widget!! I wish I could use it, but I'm a Spotify user by choice. Any chance Spotify support is coming up for the music widgets?

One thing I forget, attending post-2020 Apple keynote events in person, is that everyone watching at home (or watching after the fact) has no idea what garnered applause and what did not. The USB-C announcement got raucous applause from the media section.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber someone should build an Apple Watch app for the attending media people that records and reports the decibel levels in realtime 🙃

So…dilemma.

I know I should watch Rebels to better appreciate Ahsoka. I watched one episode (S5E17) and really liked it, so now I want to watch a chunk of Rebels. This of course means I fall behind the zeitgeist and have to dodge spoilers for months.

What do I do?

namekkural,
