I know Apple told me that I should be getting the M3 Pro chip as a developer and not an AI researcher or video editor, but damn it, I'm getting the M3 Max to run Xcode and edit 4-track Logic projects and there's nothing they can do about it

theNeuron,

@marcoarment AI Researchers are gonna get a lower spec one anyway, so you’re just making up the difference!

qassim,

@marcoarment Yep, given the Max now has appreciably more CPU grunt, it’d be hard for me not to pick that too. I have a PC for my heavy GPU stuff, but I want the best CPU I can get in a Mac - which is now the Max.

RochRipley,

@marcoarment If we just stuck with what we needed I’d still be using my iBook G4.

nathansnelgrove,
@nathansnelgrove@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment you can’t get 64GB of RAM with an M3 Pro, so I’d wager you and any other dev is justified with the M3 Max for that reason.

pkobayashi,

@marcoarment it’s black. I want the black one. 🤣

teymur,

@marcoarment which reminds meeeeee... probably annoying for you, but a little screencapture of your logic podcast process would be very interesting.

jackverstraate,

@marcoarment If it helps you to continue make Smart Speed/Voice Boost amazing I give you my permission to use a NASA super computer for that’s what it takes lol

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment The memory configuration options for the M3 Pro chip are ridiculously inadequate, so you’re pretty much forced to go to the M3 Max anyway. 🤷‍♂️

koftwentytwo,

@marcoarment ditto. same. but just for email and iterm.... #causeReasons

brtdv,

@marcoarment Are you going for the 14 core or are you picking the 16 core?

MacDevil,
@MacDevil@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment this is the first time we have to get the Max to get the highest number of CPU cores though. I think that’s going to make the Max appealing to many people who would have skipped it in the past when it was just more GPU cores.

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

I literally just discovered a good reason to make a couple more calls to vDSP_biquadm() so I think that qualifies me to get the fast one for my hardcore coding work

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

Who built a completely over-the-top audio DSP pipeline so people on podcasts would sound a bit better and faster in ways that basically nobody will ever notice? this guy

csatwood,

@marcoarment This guy notices. Everytime I listen to a podcast somewhere else everything sounds “off” until I remember these two features, they are so ingrained into how I listen that not having them makes podcasts feel broken.

ichris,
@ichris@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment Wait I think I want this. :)

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@ichris Turn on Smart Speed and Voice Boost in Overcast, and you've got it

ichris,
@ichris@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment Ohhh sorry I was thinking this was something you had going on on the editing side. These days I only listen to podcasts in Logic Pro and if people pay me. 😆

jsplit,

@marcoarment been using Overcast for nearly a decade and this string of text is the killer feature for me.

charlesesmith,
@charlesesmith@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I don't know how people wouldn't notice. Let me tell you, ATP (and all of the rest of my podcasts) sound real fucking weird at 1x, and no Voice Boost honestly just highlights how bad even the pros are at eq'ing their releases.

aahonen,

@marcoarment At least Smart Speed seems to be language dependent. I can’t use it when listening to Finnish language podcasts because it makes certain letter combinations sound odd.

@marcoarment ...and we subscribers appreciate it!!! ❤️

Now, just add regexes or character search to playlists!!! I want all X podcast EXCEPT those containing "throwback"or "classic" or "selects" in title.

(tired of hearing repeats in my playlists just cos podcaster added a "special" episode to the feed!)

janbiernacki,

@marcoarment I appreciate the effort. Love Overcast and use it every day.

kmh,

@marcoarment this is why I’m an Overcast subscriber.

ac,

@marcoarment You make the best podcast app in the biz, Marco. Treat yourself to an M3 Max.

marcoarment,

@HanBrolo The Voice Boost and Smart Speed pipeline is all straight C.

@marcoarment this is legit the reason I pay you my subscription fee. The UI is good, and the app does what it’s supposed to do, but the reason I won’t ever quit you is the audio magic you do.

@jasonclarke@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I notice, FWIW. I'm sure lots do.

sahajesh,

@marcoarment I’ve tried a few and keep coming back to @overcastfm 👍🏼

@marcoarment probably someone who did undergraduate research on audio compression...

@marcoarment I don’t know why, but that looks so satisfying, neatly organized and properly named… oh right, my OCD.

I am looking forward to seeing this released.

billgraefe,

@marcoarment oh we noticed!

keagan,

@marcoarment As someone who watches meeting recordings and is jarred by the way the voices sound, thank you for your service 🫡

gaelicWizard,

@marcoarment ok, but, seriously though, Voice Boost is so so valuable to me. Thank you!! ❤️😃👍

    @electranyx I measure perceptual loudness and normalize to -16 LUFS when Voice Boost is enabled, so podcasts already compressed to high volumes aren’t noticeably changed except for a slight EQ tweak.

    I do a little bit of compression in Voice Boost as well, but not much. The volume normalization with a simple and fast lookahead limiter is doing most of the work.

    electranyx,

    @marcoarment Thanks for the detail. Sounds smart. It’s my most used app. Any plans to add smart programming to playlists? I want to listen to all my podcasts, oldest to newest, with episodes interleaved so I am not forced to listen to huge blocks when I subscribe to something new. Original release date is less important than having a rolling mix and not falling too far behind in any one thing.

    @marcoarment the Swift documentation is just hideous. Would switch back to Objective-C just for this.

    NARRATOR: There was actually something Apple could do about it, as Mr. Arment would soon learn when he received a knock at his door a few days after this defiant toot. Two men in black appeared, sporting shiny Apple ID badges. One stated, "Mr. Arment? We need to talk," and it was at this moment that Mr. Arment realized the extent Apple would go to claw back a customer's too-powerful computer for the tasks at hand.
