the most depraved of all UI gestures is the long press that only responds when you let go.

  • can’t tell when it’s been long enough
  • wastes time if it hasn’t
  • what if you simply missed the target
  • what if the ui element next to or behind the target also responds to long press, and takes forever to complete its action

specific example: the “do not disturb” button on the lock screen, which is too easy to miss and bring up lock screen customization instead

do not disturb: two successful long presses, and one miss, which brings up lock screen customization

@exchgr We need “Force Touch" back

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr It was certainly extra hardware and, based on how it rattled by the end of my iPhone 6S Plus's life, probably broke pretty often

my website is kind of like a vlog, but it’s just text on a webpage. sort of a “wlog,” if you will

These days you can get transcribed audiobooks, I believe they’re called silent audiobooks

now all we need is iCloud sync for games, saves, etc. (i’ll be damned if i’m manually typing a webdav password into retroarch using the apple tv remote) https://mastodon.social/@kottke/112457031455385827

danblondell,

@exchgr
Do you use the iPhone remote thing that lets you copy passwords directly on to the Apple TV?

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
I hate that that is even possible.

i use the !g operator in duckduckgo to flip over to google in cases where i’m frustrated at duckduckgo’s slightly worse search accuracy. it used to yield better results, but now? almost always the same or worse

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
This seems extra broken recently (like it won’t redirect at all) but that might be one of several local issues

danblondell,

DuckDuckGo the search I barely use. DuckDuckGo the relay server I use constantly. !a and !yt too.

Is this available as Pay-Per-View?

danblondell, to random
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr I found this list of available resolutions for the iPad using it as an extended display with Airplay.

It looks too small but not terrible at 1600 x 1112, for me personally, but it would be tough as a main display.

For all my disparaging, it's a great ad hoc external display, mainly for referencing one source of information.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr And yet, every new iPad review from now until the end of time will say how it's supposed to run Mac OS.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr I guess it depends what it would be taking resources from. Alls I want is a clipboard manager.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr Now THAT I would eat up with two spoons. If more mac like just means more open, sign me up.

the convertible touchscreen mac already exists. unfortunately it’s running iPadOS

danblondell,

Have you tried Remote Desktop to see if it’s even a desirable experience? That got me off fast.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
I’ve been Mac mini pilled and I am never going back

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
What’s so cool about the mini is since I got it it’s been in three different configurations:

  1. For a few months when I was space constrained it was my only computer and I used my TV as a display. This was not the best.

  2. For a while I ran it as a headless NAS and remote desktopped in from my iPad.

  3. Now it’s in a traditional desktop config with a display.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
Oh definitely not. I was using RD for like is this disk attached and is backblaze running. I wouldn’t want to rely on it even with a great network setup on both ends because even when it works it’s janky.

The main thing with the mini has been for $500-600 I’ve been able to use whatever works portably. Sometimes a base model MacBook Air, sometimes an iPad, etc. But that doesn’t work with some work.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
Though this gets back to my original point: Mac OS on iPad stinks even if it could “work well”

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
It’s pretty small on an 11 inch iPad. I found it unusably small, or at least sort of “open source photo editor” levels of unpleasant.

Maybe on the big boy iPad.

danblondell,
@danblondell@masto.nyc avatar

@exchgr
I had the 12 inch MacBook and didn’t mind the screen size. Maybe it’s the aspect ratio it’s just an odd fit.
