Do I know anyone who does custom Shopify integrations? I need to integrate it with Fishbowl Inventory Advanced ASAP.

I find no irony in that coding in the shadow of ChatGepetto requires an even larger commitment to testing and debugging, but those skills aren’t valued in our industry. Just ship it and get promoted or bail before you have to fix your mistakes.

@grmpyprogrammer Having just switched from the tech industry to a tech job in the lighting industry, it's pretty interesting. They know nothing about tech. All they care about is that their systems keep working. If you can help that with tests, go for it. They don't want to know because they won't understand what you're saying anyway. Just do it. Make it well. More uptime, more happy. It's mostly self-guided and very low pressure.

Holy smokes. 90% of books sell fewer than 2000 copies. 50% of books sell less than 12 copies. That’s startling.

@grmpyprogrammer I got work computer on January 8, and I’m wondering if it would be locked down or not. We shall see. Huge pain in the butt if it is.

I have a bunch of ancient USB, SD, and CF cards that are uselessly tiny. Like, measured in MB. Is there anything to do with them other than trash or art projects? I'm assuming they're too small to bother donating. How does one even recycle these?

@Crell harddrives for minimalist raspberry pi or arduino? Maybe they’re not even big enough for that these days

@caseynewton It’s defensible in the sense that I don’t want my freedom of speech taken away, so I also shouldn’t want anyone’s taken away. Millions follow AJ, so obviously they value his speech.

“The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity | Slack”

Surprising? This is literally literally what almost every post-WW2 productivity study has told us and has been the consensus in work and organisational psychology since the seventies https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/blog/news/the-surprising-connection-between-after-hours-work-and-decreased-productivity

Crell, to Youtube

Of all the streaming apps, somehow #YouTube is the worst. Least stable, most buggy POS I've ever seen.

Why? It's Google. It's the second oldest streaming service. How have they not figured this out by now?

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@Crell I’m frustrated that I can’t “retweet” videos, and it’s mostly unidirectional vs bidirectional subscribes/follows. Much larger barriers to posting vs TikTok, too.

lo_fye, to php

I use ORMs like Eloquent for CUD and very simple R, but custom queries for any complex R. It always executes quicker and returns more memory-efficient results. If I want instances of the first page of results’ objects, I select just those IDs and get models back. #php #eloquent #orm

As I stare into the abyss of finding more work to bring in money, part of me wonders if this is it

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@grmpyprogrammer do you think you could sell $150,000 worth of online video + github repo courses once a year? (1500 copies @ $100 each) Then spend the entire year making the next version, and doing private consulting? Your books are great, but I know I’ve become a video + code kind of guy.

Tomorrow’s task — refactor some code that talks to an API that is rate limited so I can test the parts that parse responses without actually talking to the API. Good thing I know someone who is decent at writing tests

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@grmpyprogrammer Will you mock that API? Will you store the response in memory and reuse it? What’s your first strategy here?

Field trip for the Interns today. Off to the vet for vaccines, blood work, nail trimming, microchipping, and neutering.

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@grmpyprogrammer How old do they have to be to neuter? Also, do your interns farts reek as badly as my intern’s? Our entire bedroom was so RANK that we thought he must have literally shit the bed. Nope. Just a toot.

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@grmpyprogrammer We only feed our cats wet food, and once in a while some dry (if we are going away for the weekend, for example). Time for neutering, I guess :(

@atpfm sorry if you’ve already answered this question, but why are you using libsyn to host the podcast instead of self hosting? You guys already host your website and write your CMS. Is it really that much cheaper to outsource it or is it to avoid writing a feed generator? #askatp

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@marcoarment i bet quite a few people in the @atpfm audience would like to have their own podcasts, but don’t know what makes a good setup from hosting to software and skills/courses. An episode or segment on that would be great.

I had a fun idea for a Minecraft project that required me to freeform-draw a sign with a white background.

As far as I know, the only way to do this is to frame a map of an area that looks like your intended "drawing" from above.

This is how far I've gotten so far with the white background. By the way, I'll need two of these side-by-side, since the design is rectangular…

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@marcoarment I have no idea if this is possible, but could you somehow ask an AI to implement your map in-world by defining what various colours and shapes mean/are?

So, I saw this article on fat controllers in Laravel in my feed today:

https://mastodon.social/

And was reminded that the Zend Framework community was having this same discussion in - checks notes - 2010:

http://www.mooduino.co.uk/2010/09/fat-models-and-thin-controllers-with.html?m=1

(I'm pretty sure Java experienced this, too, in the early '00s.)

It's like we, as programmers, are incapable of learning from our own field. Haven't seen a problem before? Brand new problem! Despite it being present for literally the history of the field.

lo_fye,
@lo_fye@mastodon.cloud avatar

@mwop small bit of missing text in paragraph 2:

“to put the code that validates whether the model object can be saved to the database.”

Remove period and append: “ in the model itself.”

Great article though.

@grmpyprogrammer JFC. They won’t give up, and the people won’t fight. Great. Just great. I think there are just so many wrong things in the world that people don’t know where to begin, and everything seems so removed from us that we wouldn’t know where to go with our complaints, even if we had the gumption.

lo_fye,
